And yet, that relativism is the cornerstone of all the books. The different races and species have entirely different names for Foul because they have entirely different outlooks on life and reality. The New Lords couldn't use Kevin's Lore because they had a fundamentally different attitude than th...

The main reason that it's a Worm..is becauseof it's sound-alike to Word and Wurd. Drew, I agree that it’s more plausible in some ways and less ridiculous than the World actually being a growth on a Worm for that to be just a way for the elohim to explain it to others. But the problem the Worm-as-me...

I'm being funny but does the Worm image ruin it for anyone else? It kind of did when I first read The One Tree . It seemed like SRD was pulling the rug from under our feet. Actually, what made things seem worse in some ways was when I eventually came to believe that there was no one “right” world c...

When one family is so obviously preeminent over all others as Berek's was over the Old Lords... This is question-begging. In a vacuum, it could explain Kevin's eventual choice given his three predecessors, but the family wasn't "obviously preeminent," as High Lords, at the time that Damel...

Do we know that the Old Lords used a strictly hereditary rule? Certainly what we know of Damelon, Loric, and Kevin would seem to indicate that each man possessed enough mastery of Lore to be the High Lord under any system of choice. Mhoram was the son of a High Lord, but that's not why he himself wa...

I agree with Myste et al about roynish . I always kind of liked the fact that he had his pet words, and most I didn't mind, but that one is just too ugly (and obscure). Telic , gelid , and lambent were some of the other ones I always identified with him. One other word I've grown to dislike from SRD...

Interesting. I also Googled elohim and found this: According to Renan (Histoire du peuple d'Israel, I, p. 30) the Semites believed that the world is surrounded, penetrated, and governed by the Elohim, myriads of active beings, analogous to the spirits of the savages, alive, but somehow inseparable f...

Vailant was High Lord about 100 years before LFB. He offered his resignation . The Desolation (The Land after Desecration) was said to last 1000 years. Which brings up a gaffe - Saltheart Foamfollower said he was born on a ship during the Giants' exile from the Land due to the Desecration. Did that ...

Even more puzzling than that is how Cail managed to live long enough underwater to father a son.

It’s definitely 1,000 years between the Ritual of Desecration and Covenant’s first visit. Of this 1,000 years, for 500 the Land was largely unpopulated (still recovering from the Ritual), before the descendants of its former inhabitants began repopulating it from their exile beyond its bounds. Somew...

They say plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery, but when it’s as badly done as this thing appears to be, I don’t think SRD will be taking much pride in having spawned an imitator. What no one seems to have commented on much are the pitches for “coaching” and “training” on his site. Just as I ...

Are the any other cases of Donaldson using "Normal" people's names? Elena. Lena. There was a Lord Trevor in the First Chronicles. Why is High Lord Kevin called "Kevin"? It kind of sounds reasonable in a Ber-ek, Lor-ic, Kev-in way. Damelon kind of grates, though. Look at it this ...

I'm curious as to why the Author has so little control of the artwork on the cover. Because the publisher is the one shelling out the money (both for the art, and for the whole production). So he controls. Is it a timing thing? Not primarily. If there were all the time in the world available, the p...

It seems like that at least once a year, in the Tolkien newsgroups, a discussion gets started about what was "original" in the Tolkien universe. His work is said to derive from Norse myths, classical works, Reingold Ring, Biblical.... all that stuff. True. But what all those sources have ...

All this reflexive defense of everything SRD is way out of place. The review originally linked to is very positive. What’s gained by trashing someone who has written a generally positive review of Runes ? Most of the people on this board – myself included – are fans of SRD’s writing. That doesn’t me...
