I was hoping it would be so, but I am disappointed. Still, it has inspired me to re-read Mordant's Need after a decade, and that can only be a good thing.

Anywhere but where he'd been before. I wish some of the people who voted "somewhere else" would have said where. Okay, how about this. Kevin's Watch Although it is destroyed, Foul is able - through Roger's warping of time - to establish his throne on the mountain, out of phase with the re...

He jammed in every type of character he could: Giants, Sandgorgons, ravers, fresh, the lurker, elohim. In some cases, it was great to see these characters introduced again but in others it was kind of pointless like The Sandgorgons. The Sandgorgons in The Second Chronicles seem to be beings of imme...

Of course the rules in this world and different to our, but distance is still important. Without it nothing makes sense. I think it' safe to assume that even if the stars are not giant hydrogen fusion factories, they are far away, and powerful. The Worm can travel great distances by necessity, and f...

From the review: By the novel’s end, Thomas, his wife, and her son will all have made extraordinary sacrifices to rebuild and redeem the Earth, following the collapse of the Arch of Time and the liberation of Lord Foul the Despiser. No, no they wont. Although richly allegorical, the novel’s great st...

At the end, when Jeremiah suggests he can tell the masters where to find Kevin's Wards, it seems to forget that Lord Mhoram had found other ways to earthpower that did not endanger the Oath of Peace, which was not compatible with Kevin's Lore. But did he? I know he certainly announced the attempt a...

A Critique of The Last Dark

Introduction Let me preface by telling you that when I read Lord Foul's Bane back in the very early eighties as at the ripe old age of 13, I was blown away. The Illearth War is a powerful memory of the time, full of angst, unexpected tragedy, and wonderful, wonderful writing. The Power that Preserv...

"I can't help thinking that SRD should have issued a fair few preliminary drafts to get committed reader feedback, before sending the final manuscript off for publication."

No. No, No No No No.

Although I agree with all the other points, I can countenance this.

The ending seemed rushed, inconsequential, and irrelevant to the struggles, dreams and sacrifices of SRD's characters. It was not worthy of them. I did not enjoy it at all and am dissappointed. There were so many other possibilities. But it's SRD's universe and he may do what he wishes with it. I ju...

"The question is then, has he succeded in producing a peice of 'great writing' at the level you speak off? Will this go down as his 'Magnum Opus'; will it secure his place amongst the Greats in future years?"

I sincerely doubt it.

All good. One of the nice things about re-reading dense books like this is that there's a lot to be gained from re-reads.

Perhaps this Fairytale-ishness was the thing that "ruined" the story for some people? I think I just thought of it as the plot was part of SRD's tongue-in-cheek humor. It's a nice antidote to the relentless grimness of TCoTC. Perhaps SRD wrote it to expunge Covenant from his system for aw...

I really had to slog through the first book, but I found the second one to be far superior and a pleasant surprise. In fact, it could be my favourite non-Covenant book from SRD.

Huge Brin fan, but his latest works have seemed a bit flat to me. I really loved Startide Rising & The Uplift War. Kiln People was enjoyable but ultimately forgettable. The Uplift Trilogy began really well, but I got a sense in the third book that he lost hold of all the threads he had. The driv...
