Onos T'oolan wrote:That's a great ranking. I'd say MT and HoC could interchange, but, if I had to pick one, I'd put HoC at #3.

It was a close run thing, I just think MT is 'tighter' than HOC, although HOC's opening 'Faces in the rock' is one of the best sections in any of the malaz series i've read so far.

Just finished MT, and I enjoyed it very much. 5 books in and i'm starting to feel maybe as if this series is better as indivdual novels rather than a series. What i'm really hoping is the next 3 books really tighten things up for the final 2 in the series. Here's my rank so far. 1. Memories of Ice 2...

I've recently been rewatching the BBC series of Gormenghast. The show has its flaws, but part 2--with the descent of the duke into madness--is just brilliant; and part 4--other than Titus' terrible acting--is pretty good as well. He's terrible, and so is Rhys-Meyers unfortunately. Steerpike is a gr...

I really have no idea why people KNOWING they are beginning a 10 book epic (Malazan) give up during GOTM. My take is it's simply too complicated for them because everything isn't spoon-fed to them (Erikson's term) like most Fantasy. GOTM is a short novel by today's fantasy standards, I have no idea...

Never read any of it, I will do though, even if I have to suffer through a poor stretch of books. Far more interested in ASOIAF which i will be strating shortly, then the Bas-Lag trilogy by Mieville for a change of pace. I see me starting WOT probably when the final book is released.

I like the new UK covers - there i said it. And anyway anything is better than the covers they have to stomach in the US! The usual generic Conan picture! No sh*t. I'm currently reading Memories of Ice , and the garish cover (I'm guessing featuring Gruntle and Stonny) is so downright embarras...

House of Chains - re-read.

Don't know whether to start A Song of Ice and Fire - GRR Martin, or plough on through the rest of the Malazan series which i have not yet read - MT thru - TLH

I don't think i can make a bad choice here however!!!

Tolkien, and it's not even close, and that's no disrespect to SRD either

Middle-Earth is just so much richer, deeper, more magical. He's the Godfather, and SRD is simply and excellent exponent of the genre which JRR invented for all intents and purposes.

The movie was awful, i have only read 'Northern Lights', and I enjoyed that. As someone else pointed out they completely negated the anti-religion angle, it was disgusting to be honest. If i were Pullman i would have distanced myself from the movie. The only time it came to life was when Kidman was ...
