Lando
That scene with Lando is very brief; blink and it's over. I'll need to watch it again myself. Maybe I'm reading too much into the scene; still, it's one of those little details that add depth to The Empire Strikes Back.

U2
I admire U2 greatly for their music and longevity, and their ability to stay fresh and innovative despite their longevity. The one U2 work that flabbergasted me (yes, flabbergasted) more than any other was Achtung Baby . It's a visionary work of music that easily ranks among the greatest in rock his...

Lando
Lando was a handsome character who injected a lot of cool into The Empire Strikes Back (as if the movie wasn't cool enough without him). I liked how the movie kept me guessing whether he was friend or foe. When he finally stood up to the Empire and helped Leia and company escape Cloud City, I was ch...

generals of Star Wars
I agree that the title of General seemed to have been thrown around freely in the Rebel Alliance. How did Han Solo and Lando Calrissian achieve such prestigious rank in such a short amount of time? Perhaps they secretly ordered one of those 30-day programs from self-motivation humanoid guru Tony Rob...
Beethoven
Thanks, Fist&Faith. I've often felt that the indomitable will and strength of Beethoven's music was represented well in the character of Mhoram.

rock: Pink Floyd, LedZeppelin, Deep purple, Dire Straits punk: Police metal: Black Sabbath, Metallica The Police are post-punk, actually, if we want to play this label game. Since they are my favorite band of all time, I'm naturally defensive about setting the record straight. But I am very ...

I've always liked the dramatic power of this scene. The shot of the skeletal remains is a stark visual symbol of the cruelty of the Empire: this is what the stakes are, this is what the Rebels are fighting against. I think this scene of death, plainly seen in the light of day, brings an existential ...

do you think the prequels should have been made
Yes, the prequels should have been made, but not by George Lucas. I was eager for the movies, but I couldn't have known how badly Lucas would botch things up. In hindsight, he should have let someone else take the directing helm, like he did with Empire and Jedi.

was the Death Star the ultimate power in the universe?
Obviously the Death Star could not have been the "ultimate power" in the universe if it could be given fatal indigestion by two measly torpedoes. :D I agree, though, that it made for an impressive planet killer. Sure, the Force may be powerful, but Vader was off his rocker to say that the ...

best Star Wars movie so far
A New Hope & Empire Strikes Back represent the greatest one-two punch in sci-fi cinema. Empire set such a high mark for the saga that every subsequent SW movie has had to try to live up to its standards, but in my view not one of them has come close. Think about it: when Empire comes to mind, I...

Radiohead
I bought Pablo Honey on a whim a while back just to check out what all the fuss was about Radiohead. Boy, was I sorry! That was the biggest waste of my time in a long time. Granted it was one of the band's earlier(?) releases...but bad, incoherent songwriting is bad, incoherent songwriting. Is the c...

Led Zep
I voted for In Through The Out Door. Possibly because it was the first Zep CD I had bought and listened to, so it made a huge impression on me. All Of My Love moved me deeply, which is maybe an unmanly way to describe a Zeppelin song, but hey, it shows the depth of the band's songwriting, right to t...
Beethoven
Fist&Faith hit the motherlode with this topic! Beethoven is my all-time favorite deaf guy! :D Seriously, to my ears nothing else in music touches his nine symphonies. If an alien were to visit the Earth and ask for something that uniquely represented the genius of human creativity, something tha...

J.S. Bach
Wow! Glad to know that Fist&Faith loves Bach! He's probably my favorite composer after Beethoven and Bartok. :Hail: My all-time favorite Bach recording is Glenn Gould's 1981 performance of the Goldberg Variations. It was the last record he made before his untimely death that same year. Bach puri...
