Just finished Blasphemy by Douglas Preston. Now reading Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin....

Wow. Elena did not give Covenant a dull knife, she gave him the krill of Loric Vilesilencer, Highlord, a hero of the past. Something puissant. Something she didn't understand, but did trust, because it came from the Old Lords. Covenant didn't get angry because she gave him a knife to ride into battl...

I was under the impression that Loric forged the krill , which would place it after the making of Revelstone. The Giants, as seen in the second Chronicles, had no need of such tools for the working of stone. Besides, it clearly wasn't made for Giantish hands. And why just one, and why is it so good ...

Hmm . . . you didn't seem to have a problem when Avatar quoted exactly the same portion, and then agreed . :D I'm not sure how anyone could have agreed or disagreed with me, as I gave no position, just a hypothetical. Let me clarify a bit, then. Suppose all of the carbon-trading and inter...

2/3 of me is unhappy with the government. The other third is asleep.

I can't honestly say that it was any different under the last government, and certainly not under the one before that.

Let's say, for the moment, that Global warming is all crap. Would everyone agree that most of the suggestions for reducing global warming would be good to do anyway? I mean, not the crazy, Kyoto, Ed Begley-Danny Glover one's anyway?

If I got an imaginary world where I could make all the rules, all my children would have shoes, know how to tell time on an analog watch, and all politicians would be involutarily sterilized.

And there would be more monkeys. I like monkeys.

I think I might love you, Avatar.  I wrote something like that but was too chicken to leave it up. Of course it was highly inflammatory and poked the powers-that-be in the eye, but there you go. I am what I am. God, assuming he exists, could never be the kind of dick that would ...

I'm too tired to cut and paste, so I'll try to respond clearly without it. No, I'm not saying that you said Nazis and kill a kid. I said those are what is needed in the first case if pragmatic solutions are enacted, and is what is done in the case of the second. Birth rate limitations in China are d...

Not if the Creator always knew he would not stay. The Creator knew Covenant, probably made him the way he was. I'd say it was a safe bet on his part. In a way, Covenant would not view the Land the way we do. We see the Land full of wonderful people and experiences. Covenant saw the Land full of dang...

Wasn't the reawakening of the Krill and Trell's ritual of desecration simply a happy coincidence? I hope not! Coincidence in novels such as the Chronicles would have a negitive impact on plot - one of the 'golden rules' in the craft of writing, I think. Coincidence might work in detective sto...

As a species, we are living longer with lower child mortality, resistance to germs and disease, curing ills and ailements and our ingenuity is likely to keep enhancing that. If we want longer lives, maintaining the standards we are used to we need to plan more carefully the numbers of people using ...

Because I seperate the rational and pragmatic from the emotional and moral where I choose. :) Rationally, I can and do and have argued for drastic population reduction, including involuntary sterilisation, or just some huge-ass plague to wipe out 99% of the population. It wouldn't bother me. Especi...
