Even being eaten by a Sandgorgon doesn't kill a Raver! If I remember correctly, Cail said that the sandgorgon had "rent" the Raver and the "shreds of its being Nom has consumed." Not quite the same as killing, I suppose, but for all intents and purposes it amounts to the same th...

I can't help but think that the knowledge gained by NOM in rending and consuming the Raver has made him a bit more sophisticated in managing his already busy business schedule. I mean picture it: running halfway around the world everytime somebody drops your name. I don't doubt that NOM will show up...

I once read a theory that there are two kinds of TCTC readers. The first found the books by themselves, got into them and loved them. The second got the books enthusiastically recommended by someone from the first category, read for a bit and hated them. I was verging on this second group for a whi...

Very good guess, but incorrect. The quote would be perfect for that chapter, wouldn't it?

Try again.

How about this one?
"You have accepted the need, though your feet yearn to follow other paths. Those who pursue their heart's desire risk more subtle failures and treacheries. In some ways, it is well to leave your soul's wish in other hands."

Consumer protection legislation in this market is a must--given the high pressure sales tactics for which RoD arms merchants are so well known. Perhaps a three-day cooling off period during which the RoD can be returned for a full refund. Buyers remorse is a not an uncommon characteristic of previou...

It's a matter of degree. A Tropical Depression is an offshore storm with sustained winds of 39 mph or less. A Tropical Storm has sustained winds of 39 - 74 mph. A Hurricane is anything above that.

To people who do a lot of giving, but have trouble receiving in return, I have frequently quoted, "Accepting a gift honors the giver." I have also shared with others (and used myself) the following bits of counsel regarding despair: "Despair is an emotion like any other. It is the hab...

I seem to remember it being mentioned that Valiant was the first of the "new" High Lords after the Giants delivered the First Ward. I'm not sure of the reference. Wasn't the Oath of Peace first devised and administered "in the days of Valiant"? I also seem to remember the figure ...

One of my favorite moments from Tolkien lore surrounds the Valar's calling of the five wizards. During this meeting, Olorin (Gandalf) hangs near the rear of the gathering (possibly eying possible exits from the room in the best Bored of the Rings tradition) and says nothing. At one point, Varda prop...

I would agree wholeheartedly that the BBC has displayed considerable skill in adapting literature into either radio or movie productions. I think the classic example of this was their radio dramatization of Lord of the Rings. If you are a LOTR fan and haven't heard it, GET IT! It's at a book store/l...

I would definitely choose Beleriand at the height of the First Age. As much as we love Lothlorien and Rivendell, just think what it would have been like to see the world when the elves were at the height of their civilization. Imagine a travel itinerary that included Menegroth, Gondolin, and Nargoth...

This has to be the most moving moment for me: The old Warmark's voice was gruff with urgency as he said, "High Lord, this risk will weaken Revelstone. A third of the Warward--two thousand lives wasted. High Lord--why? Have you become like Kevin Landwaster? Do you wish to destroy that which you ...
