Me?

I'm going to go back and re-read the first two to get the bad taste out of my mouth. Everything since the Prologue to RoE ended was downhill.

I've read them. Hunter's Oath is the first, and perhaps a bit more self-contained than Hunter's Death. I love them very much.

There's another series that follows on from about 10-15 years later, starting with The Sun Sword. You're in for a treat.

But the main issue is entirely not with the characters, it is the lack of pay-off. The four books are intended to be four volumes of a single story. In three years we will be able to see these volumes in the context of the whole. I have to agree with the sentiments expressed in the above. From my o...

Thanks for the explanations, but I'm afraid I'm still not particularly getting it. Donaldson has these themes, OK. But I think he's letting the themes take over and drive everything. Which may be OK on the level of plotting, but on the level of storytelling (and my kind of reading) I think they nee...

So what is "concept" here? I'm unfamiliar with the term in this context. I think the main problem I have with AATE (and also with the rest of the series) is that there seems to be a missing layer here. The prose is gorgeous and often thought-provoking (though we all know that SRD occasiona...

Joining in: I'm generally on the "don't like" side, for many of the same reasons stated. Obviously other people like it. But I don't understand why they like it, or what they find enjoyable. So could you please help us to understand? It's very possible that we're missing something. What is...

I agree with the original review as well. Donaldson has the right to tell the story he wants to tell. A reader has the right to say "It's garbage." Or, perhaps, "I can see what he was trying to do, but the technical execution failed to convey to the reader what it should have." W...

I'm just sort of going 'ugh' here. Pacing problems (and how many times do you have to discuss your options over and over and over again...) Also suffered from a split climax (and that was all you can do with the Joan resolution? Come on.) Some good stuff, but mostly my reaction was "enh, I wait...

Oh, I think it's creating paradoxes all right. It's just another step in Linden's destruction of the Land.

Looking at this one again... If Joan's got the sea behind her, then she's not in the Sarangrave (which is separated from the Sea by the Great Swamp). She might be at Coercri , or near Foul's Creche, unless she's somewhere else. The ceasure that took Anele, I think, was the one that Linden created to...

Sheila, I think. There's a driven and determined look there, and a hint of self-distrust. Amatin isn't softer than Sheila, but in my mental picture of her she's smaller, and more content with everything except her knowledge.

It always felt like iron to me.

Iron, by the way, is actually heavier than stone thickness-for-thickness; it's just that iron (at least properly forged) is considerably tougher and less brittle that stone, so you can have a much thinner and therefore lighter metal sword instead of a stone blade.

We should probably note that the Warward was equipped with metal swords and breastplates, so obviously some iron acquisition is going on somewhere. Probably at least part of the Stonedowner lore involves singing metals out of the ores or something like that.

The Bloodguard are tough, and Revelstone is a huge force multiplier, but we've seen that Bloodguard can die if they're outnumbered heavily enough. Eventually Revelstone would have run out of food and everyone inside starved to death, and at that point the Bloodguard would have eventually been beaten...

The thing I was thinking, as I went through the re-read, was this: Linden has given herself over to despair. She believes, utterly, that without Covenant she will fail . She can't do it herself; she needs him. Somehow, I don't think so. She has the strength to do what must be done; she has the wit a...

>But she had gone beyond doubt, and did not question herself.

That's a very bad sign. Consider Covenant insisting to the Giants (in Andelain, during the last trip towards Mount Thunder) that they need to doubt him. Certainty is the route to being Foul...
