Hey Encryptic. :D Where have you been? --A Dead but dreaming. Sorry, been reading Lovecraft recently. ;) Got irritated by KW constantly getting hacked so I took a hiatus for a while (been hanging out at FantasyBookSpot.com) and decide to come back just now. Nice to see the community is still ...

Great movie. Bought it without seeing it first (because I'm a Norton fanboy) and wasn't disappointed.

Just started reading The Summoner - a debut novel by Gail Martin. I'm not expecting much from this one as it sounds like a pretty cliche plot, but the inclusion of necromancy might keep this interesting.

Don't have much, actually. The pile would be bigger, but I've plowed through a massive pile of books I was sent to review over the last few months. Hal Duncan - Vellum . Actually got about 100 pages into this and put it down to come back to later. Tough to follow - but Duncan's a good writer with so...

I can't say I have a preference for one over the other. I've read a lot of great stand-alones and a lot of great series, as well as craptastic examples of both. There are pros and cons to each format, I think. Stand-alones are good if only that you know that's it and you don't have to wait for the r...

Now that we're back on topic again.... ;) I finished Jonathan Carroll's The Wooden Sea the day before yesterday. Great book and I picked up a couple more Carroll books at the library along with other stuff. At the moment, I'm working on Light by M. John Harrison. Almost 100 pages in, but I still cou...

I liked Incarnations, too, and Split Infinity and Mute and Macroscope and Chthon, and Bio of a Space Tyrant. Then Piers Anthony started his self-imitation routine. Then he started slapping his name on incompetent writer's works as a collaborator to help them sell. It would take a very impressive lo...

I have just started reading J. V. Jones' "A Cavern of Black Ice". Don't know enough to say if it is good or not. Great start to another epic fantasy trilogy. Really liked this one for a lot of reasons, in particular the world-building. The followup A Fortress of Grey Ice isn't nearly as g...

The Shadow Rising WoT 4 --A I didn't quite catch that? Could you speak louder? ;) Actually, on Bk 5 now. *looks down, shuffles feet*. So what did you think Encryptic? --A Golden Witchbreed ? 'Twas pretty good, but not amazing, IMHO. I have the followup Ancient Light from the library as well b...

I see my last post in this thread got killed by the big hack, but I just wanted to thank y'alls for bringing Crumley to my attention. Picked up The Right Madness on my last library trip and finally got into it this morning. Very good so far and I'll definitely be looking for more of his books. :D Yo...

there IS a lot to keep track of while reading these books but the farther you get into the series the more things you've already read about, references that characters make to past events, etc, the easier it gets to see how it all pieces together. (with the exception of the Deck of Dragons and the ...

Haven't read any of his stuff, but after looking him up, sounds pretty good, similar to James Ellroy's work. it's been a few years since i read Crumley but i'm not sure i'd compare him with Ellroy. Ellroy is DARK, maybe the darkest of the contemporary "hard-boiled" crime writers. i might ...

Sad to say, I haven't read any other work, but I'll jump on the bandwagon and sing the praises of the Riddlemaster trilogy. ;)

Great series and it's impressive that she managed to fit so much into such short books.

Still have the Elenium/Tamuli books myself, though I got rid of his other stuff that I had, except for The Losers and Belgarath The Sorcerer. Good light reads that used to be a favorite of mine years ago.
