Remakes and covers
Consider, Mony, Mony done by one of the best known bubblegum groups of the 1960s, Tommy James and the Shondells. Let's all agree TJs and the Ss are bubblegum (along with the Archies, Cowsills, Partridge Family, etc.). So in 1983 Billy Idol covers the song, and while we might say the song when done b...

Cyn, you should check out Borderlands Books, in Oakland I think, they have regular series of bringing SF/F genre authors to the area. For myself I do enjoy the author appearance and signing at local bookstores and other venues. Seen Jennifer Stevenson, Kelly Link, Nicola Griffith, Laurell K. Hamilto...

Violent movie
Godfather (1972) and Godfather II(1974) are extremely violent.
ps. Agreeing with Av about Pan's Labyrinth, and not shown on screen.

Dick Cavett interviews
Agree with everything said about the Joplin interviews from the Cavett ABC late night talk show. I'd love to see the Mitchell and the Crosby pieces; BTW, does everyone know that Joni Mitchell is suffering from a form of MS. As a further note, in the early 1980s Dick Cavett briefly had a public TV (P...

Why is this always voted best RnR song ever?
Consistently since the middle 1980s, whenever a local AoR (Album oriented Rock) station has conducted a listener poll of ' all time favorite song ', Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven has won. IMO, that's not even the best cut off the album in question. Comment and discuss. ps. Does anyone else think ...

Comment to Trapper
Trappper, Surely you're joking (please excuse me calling you 'Shirely')Trapper wrote ahile ago It's funny how the Rush defenders are the same people who liked to attack Kerry over his comments on the military. One would have thought that all those Purple Hearts Rush Limbaugh won in battle would have...

Bionic Woman
So the picture of the poster keeps causing my head to hit my keyboard. Where is that picture from?
FWIW, using my OnDemand Digital Cable I've been able to watch the pilot, and I liked it alot. It didn't blow me away, but the first episode of Heroes didnot either.

Aliantha wrote a few days ago I agree with you, taraswizard. The romances of medieval and early modern period are the predecessors for *all* popular fiction. And why through four years of secondary education and 5+ yrs of post secondary education did I never learn this seemingly well known fact? Coi...

Fantasy as a category, or type.
To support Lucimay's Wiki quote. Let me offer an [url=www.sff.net/people/doylemacdonald/genre2.htp]essay by Debra Doyle (writer and instructor for Viable Paradise workshop) on SF/F as a classification[url]. Ms Doyle's premise is that comparing genre (SF and F) to other fiction (Hemingway, fiction of...

The continuing discussion
A few points to a few previous posts, they'll most likely be non-contributory to the general discussion, and my message will most likely be trite and tedious. Damelon a few messages ago said, that most fantasy being written today was derivative of Tolkien (if I missed the point of your message, plea...

I'm most likely completely off-base and off track here, and very likely OFF TOPIC, but IMO Steinbeck is banned not specifically for the text of Of Mice and Men (however, there might be issues with the text). It's banned because of Steinbeck's close association with left wing and progressive politica...

Harry and childern as readers
Back in 2003, I took the short fiction class at my local community college (BTW, everyone here knows the term community college?), and our class instructor said friends of her's who worked in the elementary system told her there was NO carryover from students reading Harry Potter to them reading any...

So I did not even really know about this. But in June or May I went to Windy City Paper and Pulp and at the late night hospitality suite I got a chance for a longish chat with Stephen Jones, the editor and publicist, who was very enthused about the project and I became infected with his enthusiasm. ...

Hugo ballot
Chicago has our own book blogger Bookslut . Enjoyed the heck out of this conversation
I've really enjoyed this conversation, in spite of my minmalist involvement. A few observations and a question or two to the group mind. From some of the most recent messages it seems that the consensus and general sense of the discussion that the use of certain fictional tropes are how one distingu...
