I guess we're just all different, Avatar, and that explains why we can have so many fascinating discussions. I found the Edur storyline interesting because I wanted to find out the how Trull came to be chained to the wall, and although it wasn't spelled out in simple words, I think we can assume Rhu...

I can understand Akasri's confusion. Soletaken demons, and a slew of other diverse beings of extreme power. It's crazy stuff! Soletaken, by itself, is a confusing thing at this point. But it's explained more as you go on. I was fortunate in that I stumbled across a review on Amazon where the review...

Finished! It took a while for me to get into this one, which is exactly the same as the last one, so I know it's just down to not already knowing the characters. I just relaxed and went with the flow, rather like I did with GOTM. Once I got into it, however .... I really enjoyed it, and my favourite...

This might be a false lead, but there have been a few mentions of River having killed someone, and who she killed. All she said when she was asked about it - last season, I think - was "a very good man". As soon as I heard that, I immediately assumed she was talking about the Doctor. But I...

I also think it has something to do with the fact that from Darmstadt Germany, you can visit 15 or so different countries in the same distance as one State here [buffalo, ny to ny, ny]. Yes, it's very easy for us in Europe to visit other countries. I'd also assume there isn't much reason to go abro...

Knowing how our new writer likes to play around so much with the whole space/time thing (especially time), I think I'm going to have to get the last season on DVD and keep the current season clogging up my Sky box. Then I can watching them over and over again looking for continuity errors that aren'...

It's absurd that anyone's even thought of the idea. If the UK decided to do this, I'd have to resort to making most of the answers up.

Here you say "God's words". That's one of our ten thousand bones of contention - about your understanding of my faith. I don't in fact believe them to be "God's words" - with the particular implications that necessarily follow, but words inspired by God but written by men - fall...

I don;t think there's much to say here, except that you keep ascribing as personal to me (as if they were my "fears and insecurities") what really is universal, and so ignore the curious fact that people really DO object to death and see it as a tragedy , and not "a natural part of l...

I feel that there may be a general misunderstanding (held by most?) that I am somehow advocating that we go through our lives quaking every minute in fear of death. What I am saying is much more along the lines of asking whether we consider death as more than just a future abstraction, whether we h...

Karsa Orlong and why Erikson is a great writer

I didn't want to post in the HOC thread because I'm only about a quarter of the way through it, and I've stumbled across too many spoilers by accident on other forums to start going looking for them here! I think I'm quite unusual in that one of my favourite things about SE's books is the way he doe...

I usually stay out of this kind of discussion, but I've been reading this with interest, so .... My position is there's probably something after we die, but I don't have any idea what it is. This could be simply due to not being able to imagine myself not exisiting, of course. Not sure what box I'd ...

That's what I was leaning towards (the spoilered part), although I haven't seen any definite evidence of it yet. It makes sense. I'm OK with the way Erikson leaves a lot of questions unanswered for a long time because I always feel they'll be answered at some point, even if it's a few books down the...

Hmm .... so what did the Empire trying to kill Rake have to do with convincing him that Dujek and his army was outlawed? Avatar, I'm pretty sure Lorn freed the tyrant on the same day (or the day before) as Dujek told Whiskeyjack about the outlawing, which had presumably been planned for a while. As ...

This post is full of DG SPOILERS - if you haven't finished the book, don't read this post. I finished it a few hours ago. I want to go straight on and read MOI, but I still feel like I need to remember how to breathe first. I knew something of how the Chain of Dogs was going to end because I'd alrea...

Like I said, it's probably just wishful thinking on my part, but it seems a shame and a very strange thing for a writer to do to kill off such an interesting character who still has so much potential within the story. But maybe JKR didn't see this particular character that way.
