The 'checking the math' could be automated. Why can't we have AI checking AI? But if we know the AI is on the up and up, it might be incredibly beneficial to look into it's papers. I'm absolutely certain that this is precisely what will happen. Once AI discovers its first scientific finding, people ...

Is the AI intentionally creating fake news? Or is it writing what it thinks is accurate? If it's trying to be accurate, I would imagine it is most of the time. The problem would be if something with the ability to spit out a million papers a day that can fool most people, and require a lot of effor...

No Z, the world won't end if we let AI write our essays..... but something almost indefinably valuable will be lost. If so, it will only be lost for those who use it to write essays. The people who cheat only cheat themselves. I won't lose a damn thing. But still, this worry reminds me of all sorts...

When the issue was discussed previously, it was in the Racism thread of the Tank. In what sense is discussion of current events that are racially charged philosophy or spirituality? Can I start a thread about global warming in the Loresraat? That should be nothing more than a scientific issue. What ...

I'm not so sure that the BB obliterated all traces of the conditions that allowed it, but I agree that analogies to watches are inapt. Have you heard of any evidence of anything prior to the BB? I have not. I do not expect we ever will. The theory I've heard is that there were nothing but primary p...

. . . not one of us would believe it if we were told any given watch was the result of random chance, and the laws of physics. And yet according to reductive materialism, this is exactly what we'd have to conclude. If humans can be reduced to nothing more than matter + physical laws, then everythin...

I mean, what is the (perhaps heuristically) calculated probability that the universe and everything in it, right up to the human brain, could organise itself to be what it is without a teleological design plan (and purely on the basis of the few fundamental parameters it had to work within), as opp...

Wos, you don't have to put it in tiny letters, I'm proudly anti-religion. I think it's a mish-mash of superstition, irrationality, authoritarianism, and inauthenticity. So, Catholicism is too religious for the Tank and too political for the Close? Let's approach that in steps. Step 1: Was what the c...

The idea of universal human rights is most certainly a political issue, and not part of any religion on the face of the Earth. You will not find it mentioned in any of the religious texts of the world’s major religions. Religion is about control, and conformity, not about rights and freedom. Relig...

If consciousness is not a causal agent, then evolution would not have selected for it. Why would evolution have refined an awareness of things, and the desire to act, without the ability to do so? It wouldn't. It makes no sense at all. I agree. I think Nagel would, too. It would be a superfluous, e...

Yes, both can be true. I said it's *logically* possible, meaning only that it's a logical possibility. That's not saying anything about the physical world. I don't know if you've heard that scientists have proven that time travel is 'logically possible;' this is the same kind of point. They haven't ...
