Your '10 Greatest' Rock and Roll MixTape.

Post by peter »

C'mon - you know you want to!

1. Dream On, Aerosmith
2. Inside, Stiltskin
3. Let there be Rock, AC/DC.
4. Motorhead, Motorhead
5. Whole Lotta Love, Led Zeppelin
6. Smoke on the water, Deep Purple.
7. Bat out of Hell, MeatLoaf
8. Little Wing, Jimi Hendrix [in fact anything and everything by Hendrix]
9. Theme from Deadman, Neil Young
10. Locomotive breath, Jethro Tull

Gosh, thats so hard because so much stuff just comes pouring in. If anybody else posts here I'd love to see what songs do it for them and track down any that got by me. There is much stuff - say by Dylan or punk/new wave bands I loved that I haven't included because I wanted the list as far as possible to be 'rock' in the traditional sense. Not sure how well I achieved this [Deadman Theme?] but I did try.

I'm strongly relating to that sentiment, peter! (In fact, somebody should start a Jimi Hendrix thread in Vespers one of these weeks/months/years)! :)

Darn it, peter, you're right, I DO want to!
It's hard to narrow it down to ten songs, of course, and the list could change daily (or even several times a day!), but here's my top ten for THIS snapshot in time: ;)

1. La Villa Strangiato - Rush
2. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix Experience
3. Barracuda - Heart
4. The Real Me - The Who
5. Space Station #5 - Montrose
6. Paperback Writer - The Beatles
7. Run To The Hills - Iron Maiden
8. Communication Breakdown - Led Zeppelin
9. Suite Madame Blue - Styx
10. Hazy Shade Of Winter - The Bangles

Wow! I'm staggered by the amount of entries in your list I don't know Hurn; true to my word I'll check them out each and every one - and am much looking forward to it! :)
'Run to the Hills' is great - but serves to remind me of the Thin Lizzie [or was it a later colaberation by Moore and Lynott] song 'Out in the Fields' - how did I forget that! 8O

re the Hendrix thread yes, yes yes. I'd go even further and say that I think it's time Hendrix 'went on tour again'. I believe with CGI, holography and archive footage a show could be assembled in the great mans honour that would draw fans old and new in their tens of thousands - a sort of concert come musical that would if not satisfy, but at least give some degree of solace to those of us unfortunate enough to have never seen him live.

That's my problem, plus I'd have to sort out the 'pure' rock from the 'could be considered metal/darkwave/alternative etc.'.

But I will give it a try soon.

I'm the same way about Stairway to Heaven. I don't dislike it by any means, but as far as Led Zeppelin's best, it might be in the top ten.

Maybe it's not the same thing and it's just been overplayed by the zillion radio stations who seem to think it's Led Zeppelin's only song. (Not unlike Rush and Tom Sawyer.)

With that said, I don't think I can argue against anything on Sorus's lists, or quite a few others.

Too much diversity under the RnR umbrella.

I was waiting for Cail's list, and no disappointments there. I'd listen to any of the above lists, though it's not surprising that KW folks have good taste.

:D

BOC is a tough one. I could easily be swayed to "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" or "Harvester of Eyes". Same with Maiden. "Wicker Man" or "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg". And then there's stuff like Testament's "Electric Crown", or "Skin of My Teeth" by Megadeath.

And then there's the softer stuff like "Sisters of the Moon" by Fleetwood Mac, or "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush.

I'm having a really difficult time narrowing it down to 10 songs. Why couldn't this be "Greatest Rock and Roll Mix CD?"

It wasn't easy. I had to narrow it down by 'this artist must be included and I'm only going to pick one song by them and this is the song that I'd choose right at this moment'. For artists like Rush, BOC, Iron Maiden, Dio.... uh, most of the artists I chose, there are 5-10 (or more!) potential choices depending on my mood.
