I have to agree with Jay .. I never hated her per secaamora wrote:I love her because she loves Covenant. She is unafraid of his disease and of him when everyone else in our world is.

I hated the way she dealt with Cail .. <think it was Cail> well the haruchai she tried to kill .. and I hated the way she told off Foamy!!
but then I guess to be honest - she was no more irritating than TC was in LFB & IEW .. oh and i hated that she so easily dismissed TC's broken body on the stone slab .. even though I know that she loved TC ..
Yes she healed the Land .. and yes she had her good points .. and I liked her for all her good ..
I thin the whole suffocating her mother was totally disturbing .. notwithstanding her mothers abject neglect!

keep smiling

I wonder how you'd perform lying in a hospital with a melanoma, after a frustrated life with nothing but failures.
(Have you seen anybody die of melanoma? I did. She was my own 14-year old patient. It's a death I wouldn't wish for my worst enemies.)

I'm not too familiar with melanoma... What is it?amanibhavam wrote:I wonder how you'd perform lying in a hospital with a melanoma, after a frustrated life with nothing but failures.

It's a malignant tumour originating from the pigment cells of the skin (like moles). Very malignant, once it has spread there is virtually no way to cure it.

Linden Avery seems to me to be a contrast to Covenant in terms of people who feel alienated and outcast from society. Covenant was alienated by those around him who feared and hated his leprosy, and he dealt with that rejection as best he could - by suppressing his feelings and imposing strict self-discipline in the form of his VSE, medication, shaving with knives. Linden, on the other hand, was never rejected by others - she chose to alienate herself based on her own perceptions of what she'd done to her mother. This is a very interesting examination of how different people come to feel isolated and rejected from society. Both Linden and Covenant come to terms with who they are in essentially the same way, but from opposite directions, so to speak. Covenant was cut off from society by society, while Linden was cut off from herself by herself. Covenant finds his final role as protector of the Arch of Time (in sacrificing his soul to a society - the people of the Land), while Linden finally gives her soul back to herself by absorbing the Sunbane and through it recognising that good and evil are both natural parts of human nature. It's a wonderful theme, and for various reasons I can indentify deeply with both characters.
I might add at this juncture, that while a movie of the TCTC books would be interesting, I really wouldn't want to see it happen because of all the crass commercialism, merchandising and cross-promotions that would inevitably follow and debase the deep meanings of the books. Look at the desecration of LOTR as Tinseltown milked the cash cow for all it was worth. I'd hate to see such commodification happen to TC!

Both Covenant and Linden consider themselves "marked" (not quite as in the Mark of Cain, but close enough, maybe?). Covenant's marked status has been imposed on him from outside, over his utmost protests. Linden's not only has been self-inflicted, but isn't even visible to the rest of the world: remember how mystified her new boss was that she'd voluntarily chosen small-town general practice, and how she was not about to tell him that it was a penance.Mystikan wrote:Covenant was alienated by those around him who feared and hated his leprosy, and he dealt with that rejection as best he could - by suppressing his feelings and imposing strict self-discipline in the form of his VSE, medication, shaving with knives. I find it interesting that in The One Tree Covenant's and Linden's growing intimacy forces them each up against the edge of their alienations and makes them deal with "being marked" differently than they have previously. Also, the actual or perceived judgment of the Haruchai externalizes Covenant's self-judgment in the First Chronicles and Linden's self-judgment in the Second Chronicles.

It's a Haruchai Invasion! The march on Revelstone was just a dress rehearsal! Run for the lowlands...

Ok, again, reviving an old thread...but had to comment...
I do love Linden...seriously, how human she is...she tries to be so stoic, and in her trying is not at all stoic (I hope that makes sense to someone besides myself)...and all those moments when she forgets to try, too....ok, I'm being really general, but I think you guys know what I mean.
And her love for Covenant *sigh* Ok, not trying to be girly, but their whole romance was so moving...and by moving, I mean in every direction *grin*

I'm with you, Iryssa. Watching Covenant and Linden walk through the broken glass of their histories toward each other was quite an experience.
Covenant to Linden:
Covenant to Linden:
*blink*"If I could've believed you were going to say that, I would've told Cail to bring us some blankets."
But the safe gutrock of Revelstone enclosed them with solace, and they did not need blankets.
