The Dead Don't Die

Post by Cagliostro »

Jim Jarmusch's latest movie, and probably the most accessible of his stuff. It has a fantastic cast, a lot of easy to miss jokes throughout, and a zombie-brained plot. Still, it is so much fun, and reminds me of Straight To Hell which was basically an excuse for a well connected movie maker to go out and party with his friends. I adored it, but I can see why so many didn't. Particularly the film snobs that like Jarmusch for his cinematography over his sense of humor. I had a lot of fun hanging out with the people in the movie, and I saw it with a very receptive crowd. I can't imagine this is going to be everybody's cup of tea, but it was definitely my cake. Not my favorite film of his by far, but probably the most fun.

I wanted to see it because Jarmusch always makes films worth seeing but I had to pass. I will probably pick it up when it hit the movie stores--should be on discount at that point.

I'm with lucimay - Dead Man has got to be one of my all time faves! That haunting Neil Young guitar theme and the whole surreal buzz.....and the end in the canoe! Genius!

I really liked Dead Man, but my favorite will probably always been Down By Law. Also very fond of Ghost Dog which I need to see again, and Coffee and Cigarettes was a great short story collection. I came late to Stranger Than Paradise, so it may have suffered as a result in my heart of hearts for it, but I still liked it, and was surprised how much I liked that actor who played the garage attendant in Ferris Bueller who was in it. But I think I liked bits of Mystery Train better. Night On Earth had its moments, and while I know I have seen other Jarmusch movies, I can't think of them at the moment, and didn't leave as strong of an impression for me to remember.

RIGHT???!!!! this movie would not have been the same without the neil young soundtrack. brilliance!!!!!!!!

:bang: "Do you know my poetry?" :bang: hahahahaha!

also...don't you LOVE Michael Wincott and Lance Henricksen!!! Wincott just KILLS me in this movie. in fact, i'd say Wincott and Gary Farmer are really the reasons I've watched this movie over and over.

I never got into Sonic Youth, but that's wild - I never knew that.
I saw The Dead Don't Die at Alamo Drafthouse, and they run related clips of stuff before the feature, so it is kinda fun to go in early. This time they showed bits of Fishing With John. This was a show with John Lurie where he got together with several of his friends and went wishing. And then they edited it up all crazy, put in a narrator who has a heap of funny lines, and that was the show. They showed the one with him and Jarmusch, but my favorite one was the one where John and Willem Dafoe went ice fishing in Maine. I never knew what to think of him before that, but he really charmed me, and it made me a fan of his stuff since. If you've not seen the show, you should, because it is crazy. Other guests - Tom Waits, Matt Dillon, Dennis Hopper.

I saw it this weekend.
It was great!

I can't explain it though.
It was just a quirky barely-a-zombie movie.
Story was different and the cast did a great job.

Yeah, that's the majority of Jim's movies. I couldn't explain the plot of any of his movies and make it sound like something someone would want to see. His pacing is often slow (but not so much in this), but usually, and especially in his early films, you could take a frame from most of his movies and hang it on the wall. But yeah, those looking for plot should look elsewhere.
