John Cougar Melancholy

nothing beats the beat generation -
stop, drop and roll - duck and cover,
hobo training is now on channel two.

two Darrens in the sunset, looks like
the race is run. the wife of Josephine,
sporting her Gehenna henna tattoos.

the Legion of Chuck Cunningham is
handing out Chick tracts at the subway,
station to station, resisting the temptation.

empathetic origami, aura of abandonment.
gibberish softly at the clouds. low mewling.
a juddering sadness. sent as postage due.

Luddites with tricked out gadgets, transistor
radios set to low. empty pockets filled with
frost-grey, gunmetal magnets. proof of gravity.

daisy chains in the summer snow. dead letters
posted as postage due. headful of ghosts arrive
in the post. her name fell like rain at twilight due.

the dusk lasted too soon. a line of glowing reds,
eastward to the fading horizon. gold against the
dark sky. hazy bright of late. disco lights pulsate.
