Before you cook asparagus, after rinsing, hold a stalk horizontal at each end of the stem ( just below the flowery tip on that end) and bend it until it naturally snaps. Save whatever broke off at the root end to make something like cream of asparagus soup, and use the rest for your asparagus dish.wayfriend wrote:How do you make it mushy? I can't get past the fiberry/woody stage.
Take a vegetable peeler and gently shave the remaining stem from the bottom of the tip to where it snapped, just to remove the fibrous outer layer. Then prepare the asparagus to your liking.

This kind of describes my mom as well, and asparagus was often from a can. It was such a pleasant surprise to me as an adult to find out asparagus could actually be delicious!Menolly wrote:Oh, growing up my mom only served LeSeur brand asparagus, from the silver can. While LeSeur brand baby peas are awesome, the asparagus was terrible. But, I don't think my mom had any idea what to do with most fresh vegetables, let alone fresh asparagus.

There's a meme going around Facebook. I felt inspired to write the first verse. SD then jumped in with the prechorus and chorus.
When the blooms
Are in the growing house
And juniper's in gin at bars
Then peas will pair with haddock
Foxglove stores best in jars...
Garlic salt and 'shroom umami
Dry sherry and stock deglazing
No more woody overgrown stems
Only tender spears of pure yum
Pan-sautéed unto perfection
And then consumed with great elation
Asparagus!
