Cracked.com's explanation of prog.
The concept album is a staple of progressive rock. Examples range from Pink Floyd's Animals (about the evils of capitalism) to Rush's 2112 (about the virtues of capitalism), and Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards (elves and shit).
"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." - PJ O'Rourke
_____________
"Men and women range themselves into three classes or orders of intelligence; you can tell the lowest class by their habit of always talking about persons; the next by the fact that their habit is always to converse about things; the highest by their preference for the discussion of ideas." - Charles Stewart
_____________
"I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." - James Madison

The Dreaming wrote:Don't know how I missed the Rudess - Tarkus link. I have been wanting to hear how he stacks up against Keith Emerson for a while. Dream Theater covers everyone, no one covers Dream Theater. They are all among the most talented players of their respective instruments alive.

I recently heard that Nobuo Uematsu, the guy who composed most of the music for Squaresoft for some 10-15 years (Final Fantasy) considers Keith Emerson his greatest influence. I believe it. Just listen to this for God's sake.

There's a whole album called Encores, Legends and Paradox which I think I need to acquire!
"Winston, if you were my husband I'd give you poison" ................ "Madam, if you were my wife I would drink it!"

"Terrorism is war by the poor, and war is terrorism by the rich"

"The opposite of pro-life isn't pro-death. Y'know?"

"What if the Hokey Cokey really is what its all about?"

Hi all, great to see a Prog thread on a forum like this!

Not read all 8 pages yet but I'll get the finger out soon enough!

In the meantime, if you're unfamiliar with Moon Safari I highly recommend checking them out, quite a refreshing change from alot of the other current Prog efforts.

No metal in their stuff at all and it's quite sugar coated to say the least with some dodgy/questionable lyrics but it's guaranteed to put a smile on your face - Summer music!

A bit of everything in their music too. Some CSNY, Yes, Moody Blues etc

Three of their songs . . .

So far pretty unheard of and largely ignored by Magazines, critics, etc

So hopefully someone here enjoys and jumps on the bandwagon to support this much under-rated band!

Enjoy!

Glad you found your way over here, Palm Lake Mustachio!
When you have the time, browse through the pages here in Vespers. Some prog groups have their own threads, like Yes, King Crimson, the Moodies, and more. Feel free to jump in to any of them, even older ones.

Pink Floyd and Rush have their own threads, too.
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.
