To my KW brethren who also live in Florida I hope you are safe and secure as we endure Hurricane IAN.

Well IAN had a very similar impact on our area as IRMA a few years ago but our new house weathered the storm with no damage. We were out of power for a couple of days but it was restored last night.
All in all we are good.
Thinking about all the people a few miles to our south that bore the brunt of the eye of the storm. It could be quite some time before they fully recover.

Glad you are okay. I really feel for the folks further south, too. Looks like a mess.

This...
This is storm surge.
This is why you evacuate when told to do so.
Even though the landfall cone is wide, and 90% of those told to evacuate won't experience this. It's not worth risking being in the 10% who didn't listen and do get caught in this.

I have a number of friends who have winter homes in Fort Myers and Cape Coral. One couple got caught in it. The storm surge came up within 5 minutes, swept their car down the street. The water was to the top of their mailbox. They got though it ok but the house obviously is trashed.

Yikes, Damelon! Yeah, storm surge is almost a bigger danger than the winds (or so the National Weather Service told us when I worked in Tidewater Virginia all those years ago). Glad your friends are okay.

Not "almost". The storm surge is a bigger danger than the winds and one that people often fail to take into account. Storm surge is no joke.

One of the saving graces of Andrew was that it was a relatively "dry" storm.

Our house is on a barrier island one mile from the Atlantic Ocean and we have almost always evacuated, unless it was a weak storm or coming from the west.

Lots of drownings reported in Ian in southwest Florida. :(

I have friends who own a home in St. James City. Fortunately, they were not there during the storm. Their house is there but sounds like the interior was pretty much trashed by 2 feet of salt water that got into their house and left behind a muddy mess. My understanding is that the island it's on (Pine Island) is - or is being - evacuated, as the bridge (or causeway) to the island is severely damaged and not passable.
