Silver Surfer

Post by Fist and Faith »

It's impossible to keep a Surfer thread to the Surfer. A ridiculous number of ridiculously powerful guest stars are always turning up.

His title that started in 1987 is incredible. Originally written by Steve Englehart and art by Marshall Rogers. Rogers left after the 10th issue. Amazing stuff. The Elders of the Universe, some of whom we already knew and others we didn't, have a plan. It involves Galactus. #10 has a very cool conversation between Galactus and Eternity.

Ron Lim took over the art not long after Rogers left. Lim is SO good! Englehart/Lim had a lot of good stuff. My favorite is a battle between Galactus and the Inbetweener. This is one of my favorite Galactus battles, along with his fights with Phoenix (Rachel Summers), and Sphinx.

Another thing of interest to me now than most is they brought back a character from Shang Chi, Master of Kung Fu. That's kind of unexpected. But I'm a huge Shang Chi fan.

Englehart left after his excellent Kree-Skrull War arc ended in 31.

Jim Starlin began writing soon after. This was when Thanos returned, with the whole Infinity thing, so he was in many issues. Also Adam Warlock, Drax, and the crew.

Ron Marz started writing in 49, with several more issues of Thanos.

Marz and Lim brought us another of Galaxtus' herald, Morg. A real piece of work. This was an arc called The Herald Ordeal, in issues 70-75. I love this arc. All the heralds are there, tons of power being thrown around.

The next arc is about a guy named Tyrant. Seriously powerful dude. Heh. The story, which is continued in a mini-series called Cosmic Powers, involves Galactus, some of his heralds, Thanos, Jack of Hearts, and done others.

Ok, I'm too tired to keep going now.

Would love to see the Surfer independent
Of the Fantastic Four until Marvel can fix
That franchise. Galactus can be the bad guy
After the next wave for the Marvel Universe.

Let's see a revival of the original Defenders!

Too many SS favorite issues for me.
I always loved the character but really became a fan when they got him off Earth in the 80's.

Loved the artwork too for the first dozen issues.
Couldn't find the artist name though.
My google-fu is weak today.

The Elders of the Universe was such a great idea.
Made me literally silently groan in my head when I saw how they were portrayed in the MCU.
What a wasted opportunity.

HLT, that's what I was talking about. Surfer got free in #1. Marshall Rogers is there artist. Surfer fought the Runner. The Elders gathered the Soul Gems (not yet called Infinity), and went after Galactus.

Oh yeah, I see now that you mentioned Rogers.
He had a very different look as an artist.
The Surfer and Nova characters for instance were slim looking.
Not jacked up with muscles.
I liked that.

I have a huge collection of scanned and digital comics that I want to post a pic to show but for some reason I don't have that SS run.

I have a bunch of them on kindle. I have them all actual. Just having needed to get all of them on Kindle yet. But sometimes I just want to see something, and it's a lot easier than going over to my dad's to look through the boxes.

Are you a fan of the digital reprint comics?
I hate them.
The scans of old fashioned paper is so much better to me.
The digital is bright and vibrant but it lack "texture".
By texture I mean it lacks shadows and fading and realism.

I have seen recently made digital comics that look good though.
It seems like it's just the old stuff that the gets re-inked/re-colored that looks bad.

Yes, I'm a big fan. Guess I don't have as good an eye for it.

I hadn't read that one. Pretty cool. Big M with the double-switcheroo!

The problem with this is there's yet another reason to wonder why Doom doesn't rule the world. He's done some amazing things. But nothing ever seems to come of any of it.
