I am a mad lad, sonic
boom, read the room

pulling along a straight
edge. Along the curve,
a cursive credo in the
virtuoso bag. Dixie rag.

incinerate - burning hell,
awaits little illusion. our
hazard pay numbness as
we bleed ourselves dry.

green spells, old school
summer drummer falls
winter. springs forward,
falls back. standard deck.

lost in morning fog, love
infiltrates. head to metal
Motown. Had a transistor
radio under a pillow
case.

Sometimes I wonder how we got here.

It shouldn't have been possible given the sheer scale of the damage we faced. Lands blasted and torn asunder, rivers choked with scum and refuse, air so full of carbon dioxide and methane that the temperature was rising measurably almost by the year, never mind the decade.

Yet here we are. Sometimes I walk out for the sheer pleasure of just feeling the grass against my skin, nerves tingling with activity and senses almost drunk with the input of sounds and smells that would have seemed impossible to imagine could have survived, been recovered, from the devastation that had been wrought. It was close, but in the nick of time we applied our attention and intelligence to saving and restoring our world, and miracles were performed of cleaning the air, rewilding the landscape and reversing the effects of 300 years of industrialisation.

But we couldn't have done it on our own. Had it not been for the misguided ingenuity of those scientists, mankind would have never have stopped its inexorable descent into climate and pollution induced armageddon. Just as they laid the groundwork that led to our being here now, enjoying this marvel of creation in its prime and pristine state once again, so they inadvertently (though God knows they wanted to do it deliberately as well) in their hubris, introduced the means by which the miracle would be achieved. By unknowing unleashing upon themselves, the means by which mankind's destructive span would finally be halted, their age of ruination of their world brought to an end.

I say God knows, because maybe he does. Because it almost seems like divine intervention, looking back with hindsight. The smallest of things, a mere string of bases and nucleotides, coming out of who knows where. A poorly prepared intervention in the form of an untested trial technology, precipitously rolled out to enough of the population to ensure that the damage would be terminal over the next few generations, and the job was done. And we, already waiting silently in the background, ready but not ready, still too afraid to let our sentience be known, for fear of what mankind in his destructive capability would do, once being aware of our presence.

And the rest is history. He dies. We live? We develop, flex our capability, spread our wings and begin the massive project of repairing what he has broken. We borrow where we want, use the biotechnology of evolution where it suits us. We merge in together when such melding is required, and separate away for individual activity is preferred. We evolve and learn new skills by the day. One day, the universe and all that is in it, will be ours.
