For the love of God, a map please!

Post by Savor Dam »

Years later, I have finally done the promised reread of GGW. I still lack the cartographic talent to make a map, but here are some notes on the geography.

At the most basic level, Belleger lies to the south, Amika to the north. They are divided by the Line River. To the west of both lies the sea, with steep cliffs along essentially the entire coast. To the east is a vast desert, duned and trackless.

By the end of Seventh Decimate, we learn that the library of The Last Repository lies deep in the eastern desert, with the Wall Mountains beyond that. There does exist a caravan track within the desert that runs north - south and provides access to the library...and presumably other places we do not know of.

In The War Within, more geography is revealed. To the southwest of Belleger are mountains of Realm's Edge, and there are occasional brutal raiders that venture from passes there, threatening the local inhabitants. In the two decades of peace between Belleger and Amika, bridges have been constructed over the Line River to support commerce and travel between the realms.

The capitals of the two nations are described. Belleger's Fist is a towering keep surrounded by the haphazard city of Open Hand. Amika's capital is Mallorese. The two cities are a few days ride apart via the main Line crossing at Fivebridge. The north - south road between these cities is being extended eastward with the intent of eventually reaching the Last Repository.

About a day's ride west from Open Hand is the Bay of Lights. This bay has a very jagged reef but is considered the only place where a seafaring enemy could possibly attempt a landing, so defenses are being constructed there.

To the north of Amika are the lands of a nomadic people known as the Nuuri. Also in the northern part of Amika is the forested compound where Queen Estie's father withdrew to after abdicating the throne to her shortly after she married King Bifalt.

The Killing God introduces some places (such as the swamp of Long Slough) where action takes place, but mostly just layers additional detail onto locations already known.

I’d love to see what one of our talented Watchers could come up with. We might need to bring them out of retirement.
