FANTASTIC FOUR: Is this cast a good choice? (new photo)

I'm going to have to let some of this sink in a bit. With the addition of Jessica Alba (who I had never considered for Sue Storm even for a second) the cast members for the team at least have been set. I'm not sure about what kind of look and feel the producers are shooting for with this bunch but as a long time fan of the FF, I'm worried that we're going to get some off the wall "re imagining" of the Fantastic Four, ala Catwoman, instead of a fan friendly bonafide tribute like Spiderman. If you haven't guessed by now Catwoman has scared the crap out of me even though Spiderman II was terrific. The problem is there aren't enough Sam Raimis to go around.
Here's hoping for something good. :D

For those that are unfamilar with FF, this premise summary of the film may be of some help.
Premise:

Exposed to the random mutation effect of a experimental machine while in space, designer Reed Richards, his fiancee Susan Storm, and pilots Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm, are torn apart and reformed atom-by-atom.

Soon after they return to Earth, they each manifest fantastic superpowers. Richards can stretch his body to inhuman lengths; Susan Storm can become invisible and create force fields; Johnny Storm can

ignite his body into living flame and soar through the air; and Ben Grimm's human features have been erased - now he wears the rocky form of a super-strong, invulnerable 'thing'. Outsiders to the human race, the group of four decide to remain together and try to stop a madman who calls himself Doom. Doom will stop at nothing to use his powers to re-shape the world into his own twisted image and destroy those four adventurers who made him what he is today. The only thing that prevent the world from Doom is...the Fantastic Four.

Of course the comics version of the story is different and far more complex.

Well, I come to this with a completely open mind (read: clueless). I don't know any of these actors, and I've never read the Fantastic Four. I understand that they are among the classic superheroes of the Marvel universe, but I know nothing of their origins. Are the Four mutants like the X-Men or something different? Please explain, Spock. Er, I mean TOM. :)

I weep for you, MM. :D
I have included the film summary in the edited version of my initial post. Perhaps that will clear things up a bit. I should have guessed that since you come from Wolverine country you might be a bit unfamilar with the FF.

You say that but can you imagine her in a skin tight, deep blue, spandex uniform. I'm sure that image will change your mind.

Well, hopefully, they will be good, as well as eye-candy for the ladies.

I don't think I like the choice for Ben Grimm. Isn't he supposed to be good looking before the accident? And wasn't the first villian Mole Man?

This is sounding to me like another Dare Devil.

Never cared for Alba and never heard of the rest, so I don't think the prognosis is good. The guy they have playing The Thing looks alright for the part, but kinda small.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Wrong... just wrong... I watched this as a cartoon... and these people are just... wrong... :P

heh, maybe they'll work out fine when it comes to the release. 8) I hope so...

The big ass movie companies are taking this comic thing way too far imo. One of these days, one is going to suck very badly, then they all will fall. Be careful with what you do Hollywood!

Well. Jessica Alba, though attractive, has not shown me in her existing work that she can convey the personality I expect from a Sue Storm/Richards. I am willing to admit that I have no true idea what she is capable of. I have watched a few episodes of Dark Angel but there is a 0% chance of my sitting through "Honey". FF may be her breakout film in my estimation.

Jessica Alba is indeed attractive 8)

:P But she's annoying in Dark Angel. Alba, die painfully. ;)

Let's all reserve judgement. After all...many of you were livid...LIVID over the choice of Tobey MacGuire as Spidey and/or the choice of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine before the movies actually came out.

I'm sure that is probably true to an extent. (Actually I thought Jackman was the perfect choice and after having seen Tobey in Pleasantville I though he'd make a pretty good Pete Parker.) I happen to think that there is potential in any choice of actor. The director has a vision and in his mind that vision is best realized with his selection of actor. With Spiderman I trusted Sam Raimi so I wasn't surprised by his choices. Sometimes it’s not the actor that is the problem it’s the director's vision. Whatever former soup commercial director that is directing Catwoman he doesn't have my best interests at heart and that is reason for me to be wary. Of course Warner Brothers / DC seem hell bent on destroying whatever positive aspects their characters have developed over the years where Marvel seems very interested in preserving at least some of the legendary mystique of their heroes.
