Favorite instrumentals
Believe it or not, I actually don't have a top five this time.
I have a top six.
1) "Red", by King Crimson (life-affirming--and probably life-ending)
2) "Peaches En Regalia", by Frank Zappa (mind-blowing)
3) "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", by Jeff Beck (Beck at his best)
4) "Any Colour You Like", by Pink Floyd (nothing more need be said, for we who are the enlightened already know)
5) "Here Come the Warm Jets", by Brian Eno (just awesome; listen as the drums rise out of nowhere)
6) "Is There Anybody Out There?", by Pink Floyd (see above Floyd comment)
Honorable mention: "Warszawa", by David Bowie

Birds of Fire-The Mahavishnu Orchestra
Surfing With the Alien-Joe Satriani
Blue Wind-Jeff Beck (off Wired, same as Foul's pick)
Sound Chaser-Yes (off Relayer)
Snakecharmer-Ottmar Liebert
Cruise Control-The Dixie Dregs
Honorable mention: "Rhyader Goes to Town", by Camel and "The Cobra" by Quicksilver

fall far and well Pilots!
Aerodynamic - Daft Punk
I'm not sure if it's a real guitar or not, but I've certainly never heard such difficult riffs played for so long.
Urban Clearway - Saint Etienne
SE have done a lot of nice instrumentals (Cool Kids of Death is another of my favourites), but I like the combination of a dance beat and classical instruments in this one, especially when the flute comes in.
The Bell and the Butterfly - The Charlatans
Acid House lives!
Bloodbubble - The Bluetones
A very well arranged effort from Hounslow's finest. A lesson in how to build momentum in a piece of contemporary music.

A. Because proper tea is theft.

Pink Floyd - Marooned
Eric Johnson - White Cliffs Of Dover
Van Halen - Eruption
Alan Parsons Project - just about anything
Pink Floyd - On The Run (in it's glorified quadraphonic recording)
There are more, but I am not sure of the titles nor artist's names.
(like some tunes from Derrik Trucks, Ritchie Sambora (sp?) and Joe Satriani)

To the canon of instrumental work that springs from the legendary Pink Floyd, I have to add...
The Great Gig In The Sky
I'd give my right arm to be able to play a tenth as well as Gilmour.

I saw him live at Henry's Bar in Austin two months before the bar closed and he was on mtv. Nobody had heard of this guy and my jaw dropped when I saw him play. He was suddenly very famous.sgt.null wrote:Junior Brown - Rock & Roll Medley

My all time favorite instrumental is Apollo 100 Jesu Joy, which I only knew as "that f*cking song" until I heard it in the 40 year old virgin and realized I'd finally know what "that f*cking song," would appear in the credits if I cared to stay and watch them.
After that most of Giorgio Moroder's work, and TV theme/background music.
Specifically, all the music for "Lost in Space" and "Twin Peaks."

Nice zone out music. Never heard it before! I just recorded a rhythm sequence that has harmonics like that. I'm going to draw lots of music from that soon. I have told people over and over again that you can write a song with one chord and still be brilliant and original. Few understand.
