Perhaps we should review the relevant parties at this point.

The Skurj, Kastenessen and Esmer seem to be more or less allied, though the latter comes and goes.

Joan, Roger and Foul seem to be on the same page as each other.

Linden, Stave, Liand and the Ramen seem to a discreet gang at this point.

Everyone else - Covenant, Jeremiah, the Haruchai, the Elohim, the ur-viles, the Demondin, the Croyel, the Sandgorgons - we just don't know what groups they fall into, if any. Presumably they will have their own agendas somewhat.

But if Kevin's Dirt is a ripost coming from the first group, would it not logically have to be against the Elohim?

But native, how we you know which group created the Dirt?
It could be to keep the Elohim out or Kastenessen "muted" (powerwise).

At this point I have some beliefs as to what the Dirt is not for.
It has nothing to do with the people of the Land or Haruchai or anything to do with Linden or TC.

The Sunbane was created to hurt TC or rather with him in mind,
(need for a new Staff and then rouse the Worm)
but I bet Kevin's Dirt is an interesting but not integral part of the story.

IMHO

We can only speculate 8-) None of us have any idea of course, but we can at least seperate the boring possibilites from the interesting ones.

My guess is that if it were a threat of the order of the Sunbane then Linden with staff and ring would hoover it up in a jiffy, end of story.

So I guess it's linked to the destruction of the Durance. And by extension, I guess it probably IS the Durance, or what's left of it. And as Kastenessen was probably bound to the Durance, I would guess it's him too. And Linden won't be able to hoover it up and disperse it - she'll have to actually fix it.

But it's just guessing of course. We'll find out in 2007

I agree that it's FAR too convenient to the motives of the Haruchai to be a mere coincedence. Though they're not lore-wise in themselves, I'm sure they have some role in its creation or maintenence. Donaldson isn't someone to use such convenient parallels without them being linked in some manner.

As for its name, with the caesures about, we can only wonder as to why it's named Kevin's Dirt, but I do cite that the Haruchai have a much more intimate involvement with Kevin in-particular than any other lord, and are a primary figure in relation to the reasoning to why they are who they are.

Perhaps ol' Kev has been in discussion with the Haruchai all along!
Perhaps he is where the Haruchai turn to for advice on how to proceed! Or wait! Why not Mhoram? Why not Prothal? Why not ... okay I've exhausted my abilities at name-dropping ...

You know, it's crap* like this that makes me think I should stay away from this place.
:x :x :x
Will there be any surprises left by the time the book comes out?
Or will we, collectively, write a better book than Donaldson himself?

["crap" in this case means "excelent idea"]

This also totally torpedoes a previous belief I've had that the Dirt has nothing to do with the people of the Land.
Thanks a lot Insanity, damn you!
:D
Arrgghhh......!
When is the next book coming out?
This is killing me!!!!!

Not sure if Kevins Dirt prevents people from seeing the dead. In TWL Tc didn't have his Land-sight but saw his dead? So did Sunder??
If that is the only effect that Kevins Dirt has?

It was the remains of the "Old" Earthpower of Andelian that allowed them to see the Dead. It had nothing to do with earthsight.
imho.

I'd think that for Different Causes there would be Different Effects.

My understanding is that this is to be a profanity-free website. You used an expletive with a religious connotation. It's my responsibility to delete it.

You've complained the most about moderators not doing their jobs, and now you're complaining when we do?

Please make up your mind, then get off your high horse.

When did this happen?

I've seen LOTS of Covenant-esqe and religious profanities here (they pretty much overlap!), and it is THIS SITE which puts me in mind of using such words!

When was this announced?
Please bear in mind that I've been away for a while!

And you'll have to have a automatic program to clear them all up!

HLT - I got stumped with pig english, I'll have no chance at latin.

dlbpharmd, I was just kidding about the whole pig latin thing.
I thought Insanity was too.

Although, now I wonder.... are we talking about the "H-E-double hockey sticks-fire" word?

If that one is not allowed then I do find it pretty odd.

Outrageously unfair!
I complained about RECKLESS POSTERS,
who were RECKLESSLY POSTING what is alledged to be the key element of the Grand Finale of the Whole Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, in the book to be called the Last Dark, without spoiler blackouts and without proper warning.
If I can't insistently ask for that to be taken care of quickly, then GD it, INSANITY RULES HERE!!!

[Oh, and dlbpharmd, in order to avoid doing a double-post , I went back in and edited my comment above. I added a question directed at you. So, hey, if you'd be kind enough to read it now, you'll have to go back. All to avoid a double-post to please the mods! This is ridiculous!]

Alright, let's get back on subject. >.<! This was a fascinating post until it dissolved into this. A little bit of maturity goes a long way. And no, I'm not directing that to anyone particularly. This is a discussion board and I think everyone should keep things civil and well...discuss.

Considering what we know, until we get more information (And we're going to have to wait a bit for that, eh? ), there are two possible explanations for the reasons Kevin's Dirt exists that tie in with events we've experienced.

1) The absence of the Staff in those years between the recovery of the Staff by Linden and her bringing it to the future, which creates a strange loop-thing that avows predestination, as the Dirt was there when Linden entered the land. That means she would have to be destined to go into the past, which creates big issues with free-will.

2) Some strange thing using someone else's lore in conjunction with the Haruchai's quelling of land-lore. What better way to deny people of their birthright than to get rid of the sense that allows them to access it?
