I've always been rather fond of Mystery Men... 8)

It wasn't a film, but is otherwise applicable to this thread:

Unbreakable

X-Men gets honorable mention.

The Crow gets honorable mention.
__________

Unbreakable was an excellent movie. It was semi-serious, which already puts it far above the competition. The main character is unsure of his past, full of human faults, and not so powerful that he can't lose. The villian was one to be pitied, which is seldom seen where we can give sympathy to the devil.

X-Men was good, but it still had too much bubblegum in it. The only scene that really caught me was the opening sequence with the villian as a child, but we never sympathize with him again. Wolverine was well cast. Halle Berry made pupiless black women the world over cringe before her utter beauty. But overall the movie felt like a hollywood version of a comic book. Sadly, X2 was more of the same, and even more hookie (i.e. the kid returns home & blows up all the police cars, ACK!). The very best thing about X2 was, again, the opening sequence. It was serious. But once that teleporting Russian circus boy began to talk, it was all over.

The entire Batman franchise was pathetic beyond belief. Read DarkKnight or Arkam Asylam if you want to see the real batman. Hollywood's rendition was to redo the TV show minus the "bang!" and "blam!". PATHETIC!

Superman was dumb, except when he was a teenager & booted the football out of sight. The rest of it was too silly. Hollywood really ruins it.

The Crow was a pretty good movie. I don't remember much about it, so I guess it wasn't that great. I think it was too trendy. That was when Goth was so 'in". And I hate people who follow the rest of the sheep, so I thought that part of it was just plain dumb. But I liked it for other reasons.

Very good point MM! "Quality" of Superhero films will always be "time" oriented as effects improve daily. The Matrix trilogy might be considered superhero films--but the effects might be considered passe two years from now. I think it boils down to, in many cases, which superhero u ID w/the most personally--for me it would be "Security Man" in Unbreakable (sequel! please!), Daredevil, the Crow and Neo 2 some degree. However, say they come out with both a Green Lantern and Silver Surfer movie at around the same time and they'r both of equal quality and both have fine actors--I'd have to go with SS from old allegiance--and the fact that I ID with his plight more than GL... :2c:

Great points, danlo. Of course you know I identify the most with Iron man and The Tick. Silver Surfer could be absolutely mind blowing if it is handled correctly. (as in Galactus is involved) GL is cool but I'm a Marvel guy. :-)

Right Marvel vs. DC allegiance is an important connotation--and who knos some of these newer comics may soon have a bigger followings than what we're used to (take the John Simon character that's my Av 4 xample). I've always liked Marvel better, generally the artwork is more appealing and the "heros" deal with personal flaws and heavy social issues. My evolution in Marvel has gone strickly from Hulk-Davedevil-Black Panther-Silver Surfer. But I do like Thor, Dr. Strange and Moon Knight. I've tried to get into DC but only Batman and the Flash hold my attention. But like the Flash, Superman has gone through so many incarnations, mutations and anti-Supes that I quickly lose interest...

I still dig what they tried to do with the short-lived Flash tv series-at least the costume was cool and the babe was red hot! :P

I still think Superman II was one of the greatest superhero movies EVER.

(Come Son of Jorel, kneel before Zod!)

YESSSSS!

Oh I liked Hulk, Spiderman, and both Xmen too.

Daredevil sucked. (Bullseye MADE that flick watchable)

just my opinion though.\

Spiderman 2 and the Incredibles are the best superhero movies to date, IMO.

I completely agree with you, dAN. Dead on accurate.
(though we may argue about what the worst ones are)

I again agree but only that the films you mentioned are the worst I've actually seen. We'll see what my opinion is after I force myself to watch Catwoman and Elektra.

Heh; I think they'll both suck, but I find it hard to imagine they'll suck that bad.

I tend to agree, dAN. Swampthing was insulting. Supergirl made no sense and lessened my opinion of Peter O'Toole for appearing in that piece of crap.

Ahh, the sequal to the Mask is coming out in 2 weeks.
So far, I'm unimpressed with the trailers, but then again, how can I be impressed? I mean, the original had Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz, but mostly Cameron Diaz. This one has a CGI baby beating up his dad. Advantage: Cameron Diaz. I think I'll never forget the bank scene with Cameron Diaz as long as I live......I wanna have her baby.

I'm completely with you on this one, dAN - Cameron Diaz has never looked as hot as she did in that scene!
