Thankee much!

Personally, the Staff of Law reminds me much more of the Norse God Wotan's spear in Wagner's Ring operas (another source SRD openly acknowledges).

When did this discussion flare up again? Yikes, I think I'll go for now. (roadrunner sounds in the distance, dust cloud where I once was.)

His response: "Holy $&!^. He's not kidding! Look at all these muffins!"

I've never understood why all the SRD / JRRT debates even exist, as it's quite clear that the only meaningful literary debt Donaldson owes is to CS Lewis.

In SRD's own words, CS Lewis "changed his life" - & it's patently obvious that the Land owes far more to Narnia than it does to Middle-Earth.

Well, I suppose there are a bunch of parallels between Narnia and TCTC.

People drawn into a magical other-where to fullfill a prophecy on behalf of a Creator.

A force of evil from beyond the world.

Someone from our world almost immediately committing a sin that has grave consequences.

The preternatural winter...the sheer variety of beings...the voyages to the end of the world...giants...time flowing differently...the question of What Is Real? (in The Green Chair especially)...

But you can make just as many if not more with LOTR or with Wagner's Ring of the Niebelungs. Or with the Earthsea books. And Shakespeare. Themes and details get re-used and revisited all the time. Such is interesting, but easy-to-overemphasize.

Check out a current discussion on one of the Tolkien newsgroups to see some Tolkien fans responses to SRD recommended reading:

I'm not trying to make a point or anything I just thought it was interesting.
This particular thread is fairly passive.
Usually there is a lot of fire against the whole CoTC series.

You're wrong. You're also provocatively rude.

If you really look at it you could find parallels with all fantasy books.

Yeah. For example, I'm pretty sure that they all use the letter "e" somewhere in their story.

And it's a good bet that almost all fantasy novels have at least one character of some sort who is either trying to overcome a personal problem, overcome some external problem, or just develop as a whole into a better/worse person.

And it's a little known fact that all fantasy novels contain references to the movie Stargate.-jay

SRD said that reading the Narnia Chronicles "changed his life" (his own words).

He contributed a short story to an anthology celebrating Tolkien's influence on modern fantastic literature. ('After The King').

So why all the screaming, and yelling, and throwing of toys out of cots, at the mere suggestion of some literary influence?

Any time I look at another Author Chat Forum...the first thing I do is look up to see if anyone talks about SRD-The few JRRT one's I have looked mostly talk of SRD and TCOTC with praise---But our Own High Lord Tolkien seems to find the anti-Covenant sites. :?
