First I should say that whenever critics really love a movie, I usually hate it, and vice versa. I don't trust movie critics generally. So I rented "Sideways" with the foremost thought being that I'm not going to like this movie, I'll probably watch only 10-15 minutes of it then turn it off.
Boy, was I ever wrong. Sideways is simply a fantastic movie, and I loved it. There are good performances by the actors involved, a great script and some of the most clever and funny dialogue that I've heard in a while. It was simply a joy to watch.
Anyone else seen it?

Watched it last night. Slow start, great middle, dragged-out end. I agree with dlb's assessment of the acting and dialogue, though I think Payne played up Giamatti's performance way too much.
Heh, and the whole time I wanted to crack open the bottle of '99 Taurasi radici I brought back from Italy.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Yup, I thought it was great! It had a quirkiness that reminded me of Woody. Although, even I, who hasn't seen too many of Woody's films, wouldn't think it was another. Just really odd and smart.
And a bit of trivia- Giamatti's father is the ex-Commissioner of Baseball who kicked Pete Rose out.
