Cage Unbound By Ghost Rider
Nicolas Cage, star of the upcoming Marvel Comics adaptation Ghost Rider, told SCI FI Wire that he hasn't had any trouble dealing with the visual-effects aspects of his character, who transforms into a demon with a flaming skull for a head. "I've always enjoyed working with effects," Cage said in an interview on the set in Melbourne, Australia. "To me, it's just stimulating to be around it, to participate. ... After the production is finished shooting here, I want to go to where they're working on the effects and say hello and see what they're doing with all the painting and how they're going to make the fire work, because fire is, you probably know, the most difficult of all the digital effects to pull off."
Cage plays Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt rider who becomes the devil's bounty hunter after striking a Faustian bargain in his youth. Although the subject matter deals with serious themes, Cage said he has tried to inject some lighter moments into the film that weren't in the script. "We've managed to really put a great deal of humor [in it]," he said. "That came naturally to me. I think that heavy material is inherently—I know this is going to sound strange—but it can lend itself very easily to humor. Because I think people, when they're in heavy occupations, you look at paramedics or cops, they have the blackest humor. But it's a way of coping with the situation."
Cage, a longtime fan of the comic, said the character has always appealed to him because he stood out from typical comic-book heroes. "It was dealing with very complicated spiritual issues," Cage said. "And for a comic book, that, to me, seemed different than all the others. I have a line in the movie that we worked on where I say, 'I'm the only one that can walk in both worlds.' And Ghost Rider really is that, when you think about it. Spider-Man doesn't go into the supernatural or the spiritual world. Superman doesn't. Batman doesn't. But Ghost Rider really walks this dimension between two different worlds, and to me that is interesting." Ghost Rider is scheduled for release in August 2006

Cage talking about paramedics reminds me of Bringing Out the Dead... and that sucked (one of the few movies I've ever walked out of). I hope Ghost Rider isn't at all like it.
That being said, they better have Rollins on the soundtrack... heck, maybe even a cameo.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Poor ol' dlp--never quite got over that Priscilla thang
. I like some of Cage movies but by no means not all--yes Bringing out the Dead sucked. But I liked him in Capt. Corelli's Mandolin, Con Air, Rumble Fish (didn't say all that much), Red Rocks West, Raising Arizona, Wild at Heart and Moonstruck. Didn't care for him in Leaving Las Vegas, The Family Man was boring--but he was ok in Windtalkers and even tho I liked his preformance in 8mm the subject matter was too depressing--had to turn it off.

I didn't think of Cage when I first heard of the GR movie. He'll have to make me a believer though I do like to hear his interest in the character. Seems superhero type films benefit from directors and actors that are natural fans of the subject matter. BUT after Daredevil (sorry danlo) Hulk, Catwoman and Elektra there seems to be an atmosphere of hit or miss with comic book adaptations. We'll see. BTW. I have passed both Catwoman and Elektra at Blockbuster dozens of times and have had no problem resisting the urge to watch them even to see just how bad they are. I rented Battlefield Earth but didn't watch it. That is a close to corruption I care to get.

Don't worry about DD it was my love for the character that blinded me to the movie--Bullseye helped. Even David Caruso (of whom I can't stand) could have done a better job--at least he has red hair!
Somebody should write Nick a letter saying--if you can act like you did in 8mm be etheral as in City of Angels and kick ass like you did in Con Air, then you might have a chance with GR.
There's actually alot riding on it (at least for me) I'd really like to see Dr. Strange hit the screen, but Cage would have to do some believable spirit world stuff to set the bar. Hopefully Batman Begins and Spidey 2 will hold the director and Cage accountable. (At least Cage has demonstrated he can ride a motorcycle--too bad Mickey Rourke isn't younger and free of steriods he could have made a good one--that cat really knows how to ride a Harley)
