Eggnog
mmmmm, eggnog.
I am looking forward to my first glass of that holiday beverage.
Does anyone have any good recipes?
Both alcoholic and non welcome!
Thanks!

Re: Eggnog
For cooking, or that quick taste once a day throughout the holidays, I buy Publix brand and add a sprinkle of nutmeg and whipped cream.Lady Revel wrote:mmmmm, eggnog.

But, for kick-you-in-your-@$$ entertaining, or on Chr-stmas Eve and Day, it's Martha Stewart's over-the-top recipe all the way.
Eggnog
(Martha Stewart Living)
Serves 26
This eggnog's rich, cloudlike texture is produced by separating the eggs and beating the whites before adding them to the milk mixture. The eggnog base can be made one day in advance; just beat in the stiff egg whites and whipped cream just before serving.
12 eggs, separated
1-1/2 cups superfine sugar
1 quart whole milk
1-1/2 quarts heavy cream
3 cups bourbon
1/2 cup dark rum
2 cups cognac
Freshly grated nutmeg
In a very large bowl, beat egg yolks until thick and pale yellow. Gradually add sugar to yolks. With a wire whisk, beat in milk and 1 quart cream. Add bourbon, rum, and cognac, stirring constantly.
Just before serving, beat egg whites until stiff. Fold into mixture. Whip remaining 1/2 quart heavy cream until stiff, and fold in. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

Thank you, Menolly!
This is my first Christmas in Florida, therefore, I have never tried the Publix version of eggnog. I find most of their stuff is very good, so I have high hopes for the eggnog.
The Martha Stewart version sounds delicious!!!!
But good heavens, it sounds like you shouldn't have more than a cup, or you might end up having the spins!

Thanks. Seems like we invented it then for some reason it became unpopular over here. I'll have to try some one day.Menolly wrote:History of EggnogNathan wrote:I've never seen/tasted eggnog. What's it like? Is it one of those things that only Americans have? Why is it popular around Christmas?

Very curious. I've never seen it either; I always thought it must be an American thing. I don't even know if it really has anything to do with eggs, and I was in my teens before I worked out it was a drink. I'll check out Menolly's link in a minute.Matrixman wrote:Interesting that, according to the site Menolly linked to, eggnog originated in England, yet Nathan has never seen it. Maybe it's only popular in certain regions of the UK?

Eggnog is great with Jameson's Irish Whiskey. Add enough, and it doesn't matter what kind of eggnog you use.
