Finding Replacement Covers for the Chronicles

Post by RDGO_50 »

As mentioned earlier on several other threads --- I'm looking for hardbook cover(s) for my collection. I am missing the cover for the Wounded Land. Not sure where it went, but it's gone. As depicted by the web site known as: The Land - I have my second Chronicles in that artwork depicted there in the first column. If anyone has any ideas on where I can find a replacement cover - please advise......

Also - - one my first Set of Chronicles - I don't have any of the artwork depicted on the above web site - I have something else....

Image

The only thing I can think of - is that it belongs to a Book Club artwork layout, possibly (??)

Can anyone help....?

Welll... after much searching - I found a complete replacement - would rather find the jacket cover for the hardback, by itself - but this will do....

Plus, I found a hard copy of Gildenfire ----

Let's hope I can complete the transactions.....

Question for any and all who are even remotely finding this interesting ----

On the Book Club covers - which is what I bought, back in the day

- Does anyone have the real hardbacks with the same artwork on the covers which you can readily see on the (1st) paperbacks... of the First Chronicles and on the hardbacks of the Second Chronicles...

- Is it possible to find them with that artwork, or would I be left with having to purchase the paperbacks...?

As far as I know, the first chronicles shown above ARE the original hardback releases. The first book club edition had the ghostly-Foul thing (with RED eyes, and Covenant on the floor of the cave had all the fingers on his right hand). See the Background / Publications page on the official site.

The first paperback editions had the Darryl K Sweet art on it - which was (of course) different from the hardcover art. The second chronicles had the same Sweet art on both the hardcover and paperback.

First editions in other countries will probably be different, since it's a different publisher and they get different artists to do their covers.

Truthfully, that artwork would look great on the wall in my Office at home.
See the Background / Publications page on the official site.
Where is this located exactly?

If you search for evidence of DK Sweet - you will find others who consider his drawings to be llisted as some of the worst cover art, ever.

Personally, I think it's a bit elite-ist to define it that way. Secondly, I would put it to those people, that they should lead by example whrn it comes to what type of art they prefer - not just find fault with someone else, to sound superior (there's enough of that crap-attitude on TV as it is).

Sweet's artistry, in my honoured opinion, is perfect for the TC Series.

We are, after all, discussing science-fantasy.

Has anyone ever seen his artwork blown up to (say) 36" or 48" tall sizings? The depictions of the giants and such were pretty close to how I imagined them.

I've looked for a DK Sweet web site, but I'm not finding one.....

Well - I got outbid on these three - which means, my friend won't be getting much of a surprise for Christmas - I'll keep checking though....

Question for the masses - Does anyone know of other places where these items would be put up for bidding or some type of garage sale?

I don't know what other people dislike about Sweet's art, but I'll tell you what I object to:

Frankly, the man cannot draw anatomy. And since he insists on putting his rendition of various characters on nearly every book cover he does, that makes his fault far more glaring than it was for (say) J.R.R. Tolkien, who mostly painted scenery, seldom did human or humanoid figures, and never pretended to be a professional artist anyway.

Nearly every human figure in a Sweet painting has a head vastly too big for its body, strange articulation and musculature in the limbs, and a generally squat and musclebound appearance. One would think all his models were achondroplastic dwarfs. This may be intended to make the faces bigger so they'll show up clearly when reproduced in the tiny size of a paperback book; I don't know. If that's the intention, it's a bad way to go about it, because it could easily be fixed by composing the illustration differently, instead of playing monkey tricks with anatomy.

I don't think there's anything elitist about preferring artists who can draw realistic human figures.
Without the Quest, our lives will be wasted.

Personally - since we "are" discussing a fantasy realm, the artwork should be allowed to 'avoid' that which forces it to become a reality of our own normal human nature. Which, in of itself, cannot be a part of TC. You can't have it both ways.

I. personally, think Darrell K. Sweet holds his own ground. It's the "politically correct crowd" who are demanding a different approach without themsleves.. leading by example!

Anyone who finds fault with Darrell's artwork should step up and demonstrate artwork, they themsleves, would offer, that is better! Lest you receive the same respite... or is it called "Despite"....?

Only this approach would gain the respect being sought after.

Romeo is talking about the official SRD site. There's a link somewhere, or just google it. ;)

There's also a thread somewhere on the forum that links to a gallery of all the cover art (IIRC). I think it's by Edge (the thread), maybe search for cover art?

And if Sweet did the artwork you have on your copies, I don't much like them either, but that's just personal taste. All my copies have artwork like the cover of that Gildenfire, with the little circle on it. They happen to be my favourites by pure coincidence. ;)

Yea - thanks guys ---- I've found several in fact all related and every one mentioning this Site as the mainstay....

I've actually been quite successful (with one exception) on finding some amazing things on Ebay. So, it's all good. What's more, I've just received my original copy of the Last Chronicles from Amazon.com...

Now, about that Calender - anyone?
