Drum Gods

Post by Usivius »

OK, a guitar god topic was started, but how about my favourite instrument (wish I had the room to bring my drum set back from hibernation)

My short list of Drum Gods:

1. Bill Bruford.

2. Neil Peart & Max Roach.

Bonzo, Stewart Copeland, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters).

Honorable mention to Ginger Baker.

Also, Jimmy Chamberlin from The Smashing Pumpkins. He's really, really amazing.

And Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden is a drumming machine. Not literally, I just mean he's really good.

Honorable mention, just because someone has to say it, Rick Allen from Def Leppard.

Lars Ulrich, before St. Anger
Jean Paul Gaster from Clutch
Dave Grohl

And keep an ear out for Bryan Herwig from Pelican.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Yeah, mad props to Rick Allen.

And I'll agree with Lars up to Master of Puppets, even though I can't stand to hear him speak and would love to hip-toss him into the chipper/shredder.

Oh, and I forgot Carmine Appice. The guy's a master of the big drum sound. Check out the first Blue Murder album (a great album in it's own right) for some of the most thunderous drums ever recorded.

I have to second Stewart Copeland...

As far as Thrash goes, you can't go wrong with Charlie Benante of Anthrax or Dave Lombardo formerly of Slayer

Terry Bozzio. Anybody that's good enough for Zappa is good enough for me.

Good enough for both Zappa and Jeff Beck.

Yeah, Bozzio's a great drummer.

Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney and Quasi gets my vote. She didn't pick up sticks til whe was 23 and has just got better and better since then. Weiss is far and away the finest female drummer I've ever heard and her muscular ferocity on The Woods should be enough to put most male drummers to shame.

Here is some of her recent work: clicky

Janet also recorded an all-drums double album along with Matt Cameron (Soundgarden/Pearl Jam) and Zach Hill (Hella), which I'd really like to get hold of.

uh... danlo, Bruford does not play on Crimson's "Power to Believe" It is a good album, and I like all the songs but one, but it's not Bruford ... it lacks his originality and tension...

OH, what about Chris Cutler!!! Anyone heard him? Great creative and improvisational drummer.
