Jersey Girl

Post by Usivius »

I looked through 5 pages and didn't see it, so here is the topic.
I just saw this movie and was delighted at how much I liked it. I am not a Smith fan, but tis movie caught me unawares and I enjoyed it. Yah, predictable in places, but damn good.
Spoiler
The converstaion with the real Will SMith at the end was fantastic.
thumbs up

It wasn't a bad movie....Just disappointing from Smith.

I think it was one of his best. Granted, I have only seen two others, but as much as I liked, say, Dogma, I had issue with that one skinny guy that JUST WOULD NOT SHUT UP! (whew! Glad I got that off my chest...) I really dislike that character. I guess I can understand why he is popular, but to me it is just mindless, easy crap disguised as humour. Everything around him is great. That character spoils it for me every time.
The reason Jersey Girl did not do well (and the only reason) is because it was a Kevin Smith movie. The 'fans' were disappointed and those who are not fans won't go see it because they dislike his movies. Take the director's name off the film and I am sure you would have had a modest hit at least. This was a well made, and charming film.

You're right. Having Smith's name on it ruined it for just about everyone.

She's only in it for a couple of minutes and then she dies.

Smith is the only director who can make Afleck look like anything other than a smug jerk.

Exactly, Cail.

Me, I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan. I saw Clerks over 37 times, half of that on the screener before it even hit the shelves on video. I have a Clerks movie poster signed by the man himself.

Jersey Girl. Meh. I wasn't disappointed in the least that I waited until it hit video to see it. I think Kevin can do better outside the Askewniverse. I'm both a bit disappointed and a bit excited about Clerks 2 coming out this summer.

The trailer. Careful, that's not a G-rated trailer.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
