I pointed out in
the Gene Wolfe thread (formerly the lead sticky thread in the late lamented Gene Wolfe forum
) that GW & JRRT had corresponded at about the time GW was starting out as a writer. Unfort, none of JRRT's correspondence to GW apparently made the cut into Carpenter's & C. Tolkien's collected
Letters.
However, in a footnote to one of the
Letters, JRRT did make an indirect reference to Wolfe and an early SF short story of his, without explicitly naming either Wolfe or the story. See my post in the previously ref'd thread.
In the story in question, Wolfe used an archaic word previously revived by JRRT in The Hobbit, the meaning & entymology of which he had previously written to ask of Tolkien, as it was of particular interest to Wolfe.
Hint re Wolfe's interest in the word: ponder 'the mystery of names', if you will!
Suggestion for starting out on Wolfe: if the 'Book of the New Sun' cycle (do
not skip to the Long Sun!) intimidates you, try
The Fifth Head of Cerberus, a very cerebral and atmospheric read, and a typical Wolfean story puzzle.[/i]
