A Steven Spielberg film. I haven't seen it but I was watching a morning show about a the film. It is about the 1972 Olympic games where we saw 11 Israeli athletes who were murdered at the games. It follows on from that day where some men have chosen to find the people responsible.

I don't know if it is any good but it doesn't look bad.

I read an article about the Munich killings and Mossad's actions this morning. The film is said to be accurate in a lot of ways but way off in others. The Mossad agents claim they never felt any guilt or remorse about what they did, and that their actions were motivated by a desire to prevent future terrorist attacks rather than revenge as portrayed by Spielberg. Still, the film is supposed to be very good and Andre Spitzer's widow is in favour of it, saying that "it is good that another generation will know".

I would go and watch it (I'm sure Eric Bana will do a great job), but I don't really fancy going to the cinema for what I'm sure will be a harrowing experience.

Saw this on DVD last night. Overall I'm disappointed with this movie. It's almost a complete remake of another movie entitled "Gideon's Trumpet." Both movies probably use the same source, but still it seemed like Spielberg modeled his film directly after Trumpet. Eric Bana is about as stiff an actor as Hayden Christiansen.

Havn't seen this movie but Bana is one of my fave actors i'll have you know sonny!

Eric Bana is generally an excellent actor, but even the best can be made wooden by poor direction or a sub-standard script.

Wow...one person's trash, another's treasure. Too bad Munich didn't work for you, dlb. I thought it was an amazing movie in almost every way.

I've never seen Gideon's Trumpet, btw. Anyway, I don't mind remakes when they're done well, and Munich was very well-made, imo.

As another example, I also thoroughly enjoyed Gus van Sant's almost shot-for-shot 1998 remake of Hitchcock's Psycho. I realize that I'm probably one of the very few who liked what van Sant did.

Wierdo....

Usually I like remakes, but this one was too close to the original to suit me. All of the suspence from the dramatics scenes was missing (for example, the girl and the telephone bomb, or the female assassin - these scenes are practically identical to Trumpet.)

I have never seen Gideon's Trumpet either...

But my hub and I watched Munich tonight and thought it was a brilliant, if depressing as hell movie.

Shows what fighting terrorists by using the methods of terrorists can do to people.

And the result is not pleasant at all.

Yes, it's powerful stuff to watch - the emotional toll on Eric Bana's character and the strain to his marriage.

It was heartbreaking to see him later on in the film tearing up his bed in the middle of the night in a fit of panic, paranoid that enemies might have planted a bomb somewhere. And then he ends up hunched in his closet to sleep instead - just as someone earlier in the story had warned might happen to people in this line of work.

The other thing that got us:

The one person the team knew had committed a crime and then assassinated was the one and only person the Israeli secret service objected to them killing.

And the secret service never actually gave them any proof that the people on the assassination list were actually criminals, even when asked for it.

also the sex scene near the end:

trying to exorcise the ghosts through sex with his wife, and not even that being able to chase the ghosts of brutality away
