SUPERMAN VI: SUPERVILLAINS? NUCLEAR MAN?

Okay. Superman V (since Superman Returns seems to recognize the original series it seems appropriate) appears to be a crowd pleaser and will likely go on to make a nice profit for the studio, ensuring a sequel.
Though Superman II and IV feature super powered antagonists there seems to be a kind of vacuum when it comes to super powered villains for the most part. Oddly enough the villains all come out of the woodwork (or closet if you will) just when the first super guy appears on the scene. It reminds me of guests at a wedding reception. No body wants to be the first to dance but once one bold soul stands up the rest of the group assumes its okay and boom the dance floor is full. This all begs the question “What Superman villain will appear in the next film?”
In my opinion most of the classic Superman villains are crap or if used without a complete overhaul would seem ridiculous. Bizarro, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Toyman. I expect there are only a handful of Superman’s enemies that would make movie sense. Doomsday comes to mind, perhaps an all new nemesis. Anyone but Nuclear man, I beg you!

With a behind the scenes telepathy villian thrown in too.

So we'd have a weakened Superman who is unsure of his powers or unable to focus his mental state.

No one really cares about the details of how these villians gets thier powers either!

They've had some good villains on Smallville. Not necessarily anyone from the comics, although maybe I just don't know because I don't read many Superman comics.

I think it should be a Sinister Six-type deal, with Rosanne Barr, Gilbert Godfrey, Ellen Degenerous, Paula Poundstone, Tom Cruise, and John Kerry playing the villains. Then, the director should make sure all the weapons are real, and set to 'kill'. That way, no matter who ends up winning, I win!

That's my understanding too, that it's a sequel to Superman II.

That was my understanding also. The fact that the new film is acknowledging the first series at all is really the point. I didn't mean to imply that they were all chronological like Star Wars. I just meant it as a reference.

As near as I can tell, the story picks up about 5 years after Superman II - and Supes has been off-planet the entire time, so III and IV aren't actually a part of the continuity.

As far as a good villian for the next one, they can keep bringing Spacey back for as long as they want, as far as I'm concerned. Failing that, we've got Doomsday, Brainiac, That Kryptonian Machine Thingie That Becomes A Super Being (Eliminator?), Zod (Again! Terence Stamp really was fun!), Batman (not a villian, but he generally causes trouble and ethical questions for Supes whenever they get together...)

Good ideas, Plissken. I agree, Terence Stamp chewed up the scenery as Zod. Bringing him back would be hilarious! Batman would be good, too. Something along the lines of the Batman/Superman Armageddon crossover comic book story would be interesting.
