I hated every minute of Monster's Ball, and I can't dispute what Duchess says about The Deerhunter.duchess of malfi wrote:I loved Beautiful Mind and have never seen Nashville but Monster's Ball is one really really really really really really really bad movie. Everyone I know who has seen it has the same opinion of it. If anyone thought well enough of it for it to even appear on a most overrated list, it is enough the numb the mind. If it should be on any list, it should be on the list of the worst movies ever made.danlo wrote:Monster's Ball and Nashville stunk! I disagree with A Beautiful Mind...![]()

Out of Africa is a beautiful film cinematically, but I thought it was a snoozer.dlbpharmd wrote:Training Day was just OK. I tried to watch Out of Africa years ago and couldn't get through it, and was thinking about giving it another chance. Maybe now I won't. I've never seen The China Syndrome.duchess of malfi wrote:Some other overrated films:

The China Syndrome was a film up for a bunch of awards one year when I was a kid, but I thought it was silly then, and I bet it would have aged very poorly on top of that.
I did not like Training Day at all, though it was not flat out rancid like Monster's Ball ~ Denzel Washington has had some great performances over the years and certainly should have been under Oscar consideration many times. Why he won for this stinker of a film is a mystery to me.

Thanks for the refresher, dlb! Ack, 2010 is another book I need to put on my list to re-read.
I agree, 3001 was a disappointing finale to the "odyssey" series.
I never saw the films on duchess's list. Well, I did try watching The Deer Hunter once but switched channels because it was boring me to death. (Sorry, Warmark.)
Re: Out of Africa -- though I haven't seen it, I'm not surprised that it's a snoozer. Meryl Streep is a great actress, of course, but why does she tend to end up in films that make me doze off?

The China Syndrome features Jane Fonda playing Jane Fonda. It has aged terribly.
I never understood the hype around Training Day.

Training Day starts with an interesting premise. that Denzel is ripping off bad guys. they could have gone with modern day Robin Hood's protecting their turf. instead we get corrupt cop cliches. the screen writers just could not elevate the material at all. the copped out.

Even if nobody thought it was good to begin with, it was still overrated, a fact made apparent by the act of releasing it.

Pirates 2. Finally saw it. Not really sure what was going on. Was there a plot? The bit at the very end was cool, but in general, this might just top my list of overrated. They sponsored a boat in the 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race (the Whitebread)... I mean, come on! Overrated, overpromoted, over-everything!

I thought both Pirates movies blew.
Yeah, it's completely subjective, 'cause I loved ST:V.

Absolutely. I really like the first Pirates, but the second one seemed forced. A lot of the good qualities from the first seemed to be missing - and I really hate paying to see a film that flagrantly ends mid-plot. Ongoing stories are fine, but each installment needs it own little conclusion. I left the cinema feeling I'd been tricked into seeing half a film.Alynna Lis Eachann wrote:Pirates 2. Finally saw it.
