I still exist!
Hello, everyone! According to MsMary, there are apparently people here who still remember me, even though I haven't posted regularly in almost three years.
It's been such a long time. Last time I posted I was still in high school! Now I'm halfway through my third year of college, and as is usually the case, a lot has changed in those three years. My life's gone through some ups and downs, but I think in general the good has outweighed the bad. I spend a lot of my time getting way too excited about poetry and logic, my two academic loves. I sing in a lovely little early music choir that's full of geeks like me. I've made many wonderful friends, mostly in the Jewish community; every weekend we get together for Shabbat dinner, followed by singing and general stress-relieving fun.
I still love sci-fi and fantasy (and TCTC, of course!), but I don't have much time to read for pleasure anymore, or to frequent web forums as I used to. College is a LOT of work. Fun, though. I love my school (<--a sentence I would never have uttered three years ago). One of the nice things about college is that everyone is a geek in some way or another, so I'm not the only one.
Anyway, that's the quick run down of my past three years. Nice to see you all again! And hello, new people!

Re: I still exist!
So nice to see you again! I miss your extended quotes in Dissecting.
I hope you have time to post anything about these two things. Poetry is difficult for me, but I'm always interested to hear about it. And the Loresraat could use a Logic thread, I think!Foamfollower1013 wrote:I spend a lot of my time getting way too excited about poetry and logic, my two academic loves.
What have you sung? I've been in a couple such groups myself. Madrigals are great stuff! Monteverdi is one of my favorite composers of all.Foamfollower1013 wrote:I sing in a lovely little early music choir that's full of geeks like me.
Well, this is a family site, so I won't ask about those stress-relieving activities. Re: I still exist!
We have a different theme every semester. Last spring the theme was "Music in the Cloisters," and the program consisted mainly of music composed by women in convents. The highlights of that concert were these absolutely insane (but awesome) chants by Hildegard von Bingen that went all over the scale. Those were really tricky to sing - tested the range of everyone in the choir! - but came out sounding really pretty. We also did some early baroque stuff that semester.Fist and Faith wrote:What have you sung? I've been in a couple such groups myself. Madrigals are great stuff! Monteverdi is one of my favorite composers of all.
This fall we did "A Medieval Christmas," with Christmas-themed music from the tenth through fifteenth centuries. I don't actually know the composers of most of it, though, because I forgot to pick up a program at the concert (and the names weren't on a lot of the sheet music).
Last year (before I joined the choir) they did a concert of Celtic music, which is one of my favorite kinds of music. They had the school's resident Celtic band play as well. I went to hear them and came out thinking, "Okay, that settles it. I have GOT to join this choir."
*raises eyebrow* I meant talking and giggling a lot. What were you thinking?Fist and Faith wrote:Well, this is a family site, so I won't ask about those stress-relieving activities.
At least until my winter break ends. After that I can't promise anything.Cheval wrote: Plan to stick around for a while?

Re: I still exist!
The music sounds pretty cool. I don't know much Celtic music, aside from a little of the Chieftans. And I think something called Skye Boat Song is Celtic?
That. Yes. Exactly what I meant.Foamfollower1013 wrote:*raises eyebrow* I meant talking and giggling a lot. What were you thinking?Fist and Faith wrote:Well, this is a family site, so I won't ask about those stress-relieving activities.
