Great movie. Both Phoenix and Whitherspoon did a fine job, and they did a good job on my little pet peeve, which is era correct instruments (I still can't believe how badly they botched that in the Buddy Holly Story....).

He was playing what looked like a Fender Mustang in the opening sequence. The Mustang was first sold in November '64, while Buddy died in '59, meaning he never saw one in his life. It could have been a Duosonic, which was produced from '56 on, but I'm pretty sure that red wasn't a color option until the '60's. The scene of his last concert has him playing a '77 or '78 Strat, too.

Phoenix was outstanding. His performances of the songs were far superior to those of Jaimie Fox doing Ray Charles in that, it seems that Fox was doing imitations where Phoenix was emoting just the way Cash would have. He was ACTING as he sang, rather than singling like Ray. Lord, am I making sense?

You make sense, but I still disagree with the implication that Jamie Fox wasn't acting while performing.

Upon further review of Guns' post, I think he doesn't have a clue as to what acting is.

I thought Walk the Line was great.

I knew very little about about Johnny Cash, other then a few of his songs the my Dad used to teach in his guitar lessens.

I was one of those who thought he had spent a fair bit of time in jail.

As far as the whole Love-Story thing goes...well it was a love story..he was just a complete jerk about it.


I couldn't help but make a few comparisms with Ray when I watched it.
They both came from poor families.
They both lost a brother at a young age.
They both were addicted to drugs bad enough that it nearly ruined their lives.
They both had long-term affairs (the course of their affairs were different, but they still both had them)
They were both fairly religius men. (ironically, when you read the two previous items)

This movie reminded me of all those songs that my dad used to play that I loved to listen to...I now try to listen to as much Cash as I can...except the newer stuff...I don't really like his cover versions of hard rock songs.
