Actually, the Sarah Jane relationship with her Drs was pretty close to the Rose relationship with hers, aside from the last scene where they exchanged "I Love yous", and they brought her back earlier in the season, to highlight that fact. I think the ending was the best of all possible ends, precisely because she gets back everything she has lost, except for the Dr. I really like Tennant's Dr, and I am sorry to see Rose go. Funny, I remember when the revival was first announced, everyone graoned when Billie Piper was announced as the Dr's companion. Turns out, she was among the best of them.

Just an aside...

In packing for our move, I came across an old 3/4 sleeve length t-shirt, with the Dr. Who logo from the end of the Pertwee/majority of the Tom Baker era (I think of it as the 'diamond stained glass' logo) on it and decided to wear it yesterday. I expected to get comments from Beorn's classmates, as his Science/Social Studies teacher has introduced his classes to the series since it was revived with Eccelston.

What I didn't expect was the number of positive comments I received from strangers as I went out and about my day. Totally cool to see a fan base IRL.

Sindatur, thanks for your reply and comments. I agree with everything, except the conclusion of Rose's character arc; IMO, it's an authorial copout by RTD (he had a chance to do something amazing and instead we go something mundane). I especially agree with your commenting on the similarity between the Sarah Jane Smith and Rose Tyler as companions and how their relationships to the the Doctor are very similar.

Agree with you totally about Billie Piper as Rose Tyler.

Sorry I haven't checked in here in such a long time, as I didn't watch the show for a while. Not because of any issues with the show itself, I'm just incapable of following a weekly series for any extended period these days.

Anyway, I came round just in time for the last two episodes - Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. Regarding Rose Tyler:

Actually, I can't say I'm surprised that the "weepy" bit between Rose and the Doctor has caused so much debate among fans. I recognize that such open displays of affectionate emotion are probably not what Dr. Who fans like to see on the show. Personally, though, I had no trouble with it. In fact, I was quite moved by it all. I genuinely felt sadness for both the Doctor and Rose, that they should be separated in such wrenching fashion - literally.

The scene on the beach - that got me. I admit it, my eyes got a little moist. I don't know why it should bother fans so much for Rose to cry a little - after all, this is the last time she'll see the Doctor. Rose's almost inchoate "I love you" sums up that feeling of losing something, someone precious and not having any time left to say all that you want to say.

Yes, I'll miss Billie Piper.

As for Rose's story arc being concluded unsatisfactorily...I haven't seen every Dr. Who episode, but I'd agree with Lore that the same sort of thing seems to happen to all his companions.

Taras, I see your point about this being a missed opportunity by Davies to do something out of the ordinary with Rose. Maybe he just didn't want to mess too much with an established formula - just like how some things always happen in certain ways in a James Bond movie.

How about turning Rose into a female Time Lord? That would certainly be out of the ordinary. Right, Lore?

I don't know what to say about the level of dislike (if not actual hostility) towards David Tennant. I really have no issues with him as the Doctor. IMO, his hyper, frenetic style isn't any worse than what I saw from, say, Colin Baker.

It's not hostility towards Tennant, but directed at Tennant's portrayal. I think the 10th Doctor is the worst Doctor we have ever had. It's not his hyper-personality that annoys; it's his endless pop-culture quotes and the fact that some of the scenes in the second series were just awful (Girl in the Fireplace). But that's me. Most fans love him (but then again, most fans loved McCoy over Baker during the 23-25th seasons . . .).

I know this is late, but I totally love David Tennant as the Dr!
Although, I only started watching Dr Who becuase of David Tennant, but I am surpried that I have enjoyed it so much! It is very funny.
So yeah, that is what I think.

Season 4 has been ordered, no word on wether Tennant continues as the Dr, or when we in the US will see S3 yet (Per SciFi Wire). Also, there is a character spoiler for S3 final two episodes about an old nemesis.

Torchwood has been mentioned a few times in this thread. I've never looked into this series, and honestly it's never piqued my interest. Just from a passing description, Torchwood sounds to me like some X-Files wannabe. I think I'm just biased against spin-off shows in general. Also, it doesn't help Torchwood's cause that here in Canada there has been zero promotion for the show. The CBC has been showing the new Dr. Who, but I don't think they picked up Torchwood.

In any case, my loyalty is to the Doctor, not to Torchwood.

I watched 4 or 5 episodes of Torchwood, and did quite like it though. It's less slick than the X-files, sure, but I found it different enough - and a bit more contact with 'everyday' people. It was also quite refreshing that they didn't tiptoe around the sexuality of the protagonists either, but they wove it into several of the storylines.

Not a classic, but definitely worth giving it a try. IMHO.

I'm loyal to the Doctor too, but I've got to say I enjoyed the last (well, first) season of Torchwood more than the last season of DW. Mainly, I think, because dark humor appeals to me more than the over-the-top silliness that was affecting (infecting? infesting?) the last season of DW.

I thought a certain silliness or whimsy was part of the inherent charm of the Doctor, and it didn't seem to me that it had gone over-the-top. Mind you, I did miss several episodes of the Tennant season, so maybe I missed the ones that were judged to be excessively silly.

Not really. In fact, the most criticised seasons of Tom Baker were when he was allowed to act over the top (and thus silly). But the golden era, according to many fans, was when Dr Who was darker (Hinchcliffe era).

Anyway, I don't think I'll be pursuing the third season. I was full of praise for the series, but Tennant's Doctor is so bad I just cant watch any more.

Well, after over twenty-five years of watching Doctor Who, I am now not watching the new episodes. I can't believe this has happened . . . .can't they just remove Tennant's character?
