:::gritting teeth:::

I thought my dial-up connection at home (where I can at least connect at 49.8K, please don’t laugh) was bad. But here at FIL’s the fastest connection I am finding is 26.5K.

:::and I keep getting booted:::

Every page is taking at least 45 seconds to load. I am so not a patient creature…

grrrr…

It's something for the very patient. Or the hopelessly cheap.

I have one too, which is why I tend to do my posts at work, as it takes too damn long at home.

(i'll assume you're using Internet Explorer)
I would say goodbye to any pictures or multimedia experience while browsing the Net.

I found this on the net and tried it out before suggesting it and it works fine:

1. Go to "tools/options/advanced and turn off Graphics and rich multimedia content in IE (see graphic). Graphics and embedded videos or music files take time to download and you can disable them to speed up browsing.

Here's the graphic:

Also, most pages have advertisements using Flash or something like that.
To kill all that go into Internet Options/Programs and then press the "Manage Add-ons" button. Once there find the "shockwave Flash Object. click it then choose "disable" then click "ok"

This is horrible to look at barebones text only browsing but if you just want to read what people write then it's an option.

Now, if things change it's as easy as clicking "restore defaults" to go back to the 21st Century.

I cannot access KW at all with AOL. I use IE at work or Mozilla at home.

If you're hopelessly cheap, you might want to consider netzero. IIRC, they provide free internet if you're under 10 hours, so if you're not on too much. Then again, if ya are, it might still be worth checking the price for the over 10 hour mark. I know nothing about how good they are, just throwing it out there.

We've got a spiffy cable connection...but ever since I got back (2 days ago) it's continually been turning off for short periods. A repair guy's supposed to come tomorrow.

Holesty, I easily do 10 hours a day...

My understanding is NetZero is around $9.95/month for unlimited dial-up access. That's the deal I have with AOL, after having had free dial-up access for over a decade for being a board host in various forums on AOL itself ...

Oh my...

I will hardly ever complain about my typical 49.3K dial-up connection again...

It is so good to be home!!

I may miss out on the YouTube links, but I am now OK with that...

Glad you're over your Dial-up Doldrums, Menolly.

I'm experiencing my own Broadband Blues at the moment. I have cable, but it's not behaving nicely. Aargh.
