Beck is so good, and so under appreciated.

Anyone who doubts Beck's prowess needs to check out Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop. It came out in '89 or so, and it absolutely shreds.

Are you thinking of Wired? I've never heard Guitar Shop-in fact I may go out and buy it today.
I love the old stuff too-like Beck-Ola, Truth, Rough and Ready and the 'orange' album. Aside from Faces, Rod Stewart does a fantastic job on The Jeff Beck Group's first two LPs with classics like Ain't Superstitious and Shape of Things (too bad he had to go downhill after that). Plynth (Like water down the drain) is one of my favorite songs of all
time and, of course, the guitar lines are blistering.
I saw Jeff Beck live 7 years ago and he totally blew the roof off the Kiva-one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

fall far and well Pilots!
Guitar Shop features Terri Bozzio on drums; yet another shamefully underrated musician.
This album will make anyone a Beck believer.

Alas the poor Yardbirds never had any good guitarists. Only Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, poor babies!

someone at wikipedia wrote:Rather than presenting the Yardbirds with a setback after Clapton's departure, Jeff Beck's tenure in the band actually propelled the group forward into new artistic realms that were revolutionary at the time, as well as upward commercially, and saw the band at their absolute zenith in terms of their influence and prominence within the existing music scene in the UK and abroad. The Yardbirds embarked on their first US tour in late August, 1965, and would return for 3 more US tours during Beck's time with the group, further solidifying his reputation as the most exciting and innovative guitarist on the international 'pop' music scene. A brief European tour took place in April, 1966.
The Beck-era Yardbirds produced a number of memorable, groundbreaking recordings, from single hits like "Heart Full of Soul", "I'm A Man", and "Shapes of Things" to the Yardbirds album (known more popularly as Roger the Engineer, and first issued in the U.S. in a bowdlerised version called Over Under Sideways Down), and established him as a top-rank guitarist.

Flash is a so-so album with a couple of great guitar licks. Both "Ambitious" and "Gets Us All in the End" are amazing.

It's amazing how good such guys are live. I'm glad you saw him live, Danlo.
And yeah, Cail's tempted me to pick up "Guitar Shop" too.

That is such a great song DLB. I love the duality of Beck's playing on that track.

Check out the playlist on Beck-Ola:
All Shook Up
Spanish Boots
Girl from Mill Valley (isn't that B. J. Hunicutt's wife?
)
Jailhouse Rock
Plynth (Water down the Drain)
The Hangman's Knee
and the awesome Rice Pudding
and I haven't even put it on yet--I tell you I'm quivering!
edit: I'm listening to it now a half hour later and Tam's wandering around going to herself, "The guitar is hyper, but doesn't that guy sound like the singer on my Great American Songbook CDs?"

You know buying that CD is like buying a whole 'nother CD-as it has four bonus tracks never heard before, and the bonus tracks are better than the original album made in '69. dlb might change his mind if he ever listens to Sweet Angel and Throw Down a Line. I, personally, like the earlier versions of All Shook Up and Jailhouse Rock included. I think Beck actually sings backup on Throw Down a Line I've never heard him sing before-it's pretty cool.
I wish I could mp3 this stuff for you guys-it's truly classic and very raw blues.
