Music sharing

Post by Vain »

Does anybody share CD's...I'm not talking MP3's and stuff - with people they know?

My hairdresser and I exchange stuff quite frequently - she has some erm acquired tastes but it does broaden my horizons and I end up buying different stuff as a result.

Or am I just old fashioned and MP3/iPod stuff is the way to go?

Considering I'm on dial-up and downloading takes forever, yeah, I still do CD sharing.

And sometimes, the album notes and cover just totally makes the whole experience. Although I find fewer and fewer listeners seem to ever look at the album notes.

I've got a group of friends that I regularly go to music festivals with, over the summer, and we tend to get in a frenzy of cd sharing in spring, once the line-ups have been announced.

A friend gave me a Christmas present last year - it's like an old-fashioned library card/stamp system, that you can use with cds that you lend out! I'll try and find details online and post a pic later.

Could you be indicted for illegal file sharing for that? Because I honestly don't see a difference between letting someone borrow a cd (to import to Itunes) and sending them an MP3.

Not that I think it should be! I'm just being cynical. (And I do it all the time myself, I'm a hopeless music snob, so I am always quick to impose my stuff onto everyone)

I think according to the law even that is illegal.

i like that idea. but i always hate when people tell me they listen to "anything." most people will not listen to just anything. me, i do like a bit of everything. from ganster rap to bluegrass to klezmer to all points between.

Perhaps we should start another thread? 'How to burn the perfect mix cd'.

I got my nice collection of Pink Floyd concert recordings and other bootlegs like that... we called it "weeding"; one person on the mailing list just started the thread, made 5 copies and sent it out all over the world to people, for free, with the only obligation to perpetuate the weed. Ah, nice days... nowadays it's just easier to leech them from a torrent, even in SHN or FLAC it is no problem with the broadband connections we can have.
But it was fun and excitement to wait for the CDs to arrive in your post, and then listen to them for the first time.

I used to. Once upon a time. When I knew and was around people who had decent taste in music.

But that's exactly HOW you get the people around you to have a decent taste in music - lend them/burn them your favourite cds and hassle them to listen to them !

Exchanging the physical medium (swapping CDs) is not illegal. Copying a swapped CD is murky. Until you give the CD back, provided the person who gave it to you hasn't ripped it, all's fine. But when you give the CD back, if you have ripped/copied it, you're engaging in copyright infringement.

Believe me I've tried. It was totally hopeless!
