I am both intrigued and disturbed by that website.

Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

It's used for poisonings. If you swallow something that you really shouldn't, and having a stomach pumped is not an option, taking an ounce (I mean a literal 1 liquid ounce) of Ipecac will make you puke it up. It will also make you wish you'd never been born for several hours. You will become very well acquainted with what the mucousal lining of your esophagus looks like when it's on the bathroom tile floor. It works, IIRC, by iritating the shit out of the nerves in your stomach. One of the things you sometimes see with people who make themselves puke alot is significant damage to their stomach from using Ipecac.Prebe wrote:According to Wiki, you are not supposed to take it at all.

Nope.
When my kids were little, the routine advice was to go down to your local drugstore and get a bottle of ipecac syrup to keep on hand, in case your little one swallowed something bad and Poison Control told you (after you called them, not via the little voices in your head) to administer it to induce vomiting. They stopped recommending it awhile ago, after they realized that parents could (and, apparently, did) skip the "call Poison Control" step and just administer the ipecac -- which is a Very Bad Idea if what the kid swallowed is something caustic.

Active coal is the prefered treatment today. Ipecac is not recommended by anyone, at least not according to Wikipedia. One of the main reasons, apart from the stuff being harmful in itself, is that it could prevent subsequent oral adminstration of a REAL antidote or absorbant such as active coal.

Syrup of Ipecac is highly useful in first aid kits that are too small to include a quart of LiquiChar or a Stomach Pump. If you're out in the middle of nowhere camping and someone eats something that they thought wasn't toxic but actually is, Ipecac can be a life saver, particularly if they can't be induced to vomit otherwise.
Of course, I used it once to get out of work to go see a band play.*
It was awesome.**
*I really like Whoreculture.
**I mean, I really, really like that damn band. It was so worth the losing the mucus lining of my esophagus.
