I don't think anyone has a problem with the banter as long as it's game related. Admittedly, when it rolls on for several posts, I start skimming over it, but the only real problem, and a minuscule one at that, is that it makes solid game info harder to find.

The only real critique I have seen is the use of emoticons and certain language used that simply doesn't fit with a godly setting (thus my question about the quotes. and if someone had said that they did detract from their enjoyment, even slightly, I would find a way to rework it... in fact, the very idea of doing so has opened my mind up to several possibilities that would allow Aarklar more interaction and direct influence). I think that's a perfectly justifiable comment to make in the comment thread.

Nobody's telling anyone how to play or that they're not good players. It's just a few people (at a glance, I'd say Murrin, Montressor, Dorian, Lore, and myself) expressing their opinion. I don't think it's unreasonable of us to do so. And when a sizable contingent, even if a minority, expresses a viewpoint, it's at least worth considering, eh? I don't see anyone asking for more than that. The suggestions I have made have been for the purpose of accommodating everyone's wishes as much as possible (I mean, you don't see me threatening to quit when Menolly tries to poke holes in my ideas, do you? hell, I would have never played again after the whole Law of Return fiasco with that kind of approach).

Personally, I'm completely open to critiques if anyone has them. I may not agree, but if there was something I could do better, I'd appreciate it if someone politely pointed it out.

basically what you fellas were complaining about is that some of us aren't good enough "actors."

and i'd just like you more experienced players to know that i, for one, am acutely aware that you are more experienced. we appreciate any and all advice on how to better play the game. ;)

Going over some of this with Creator earlier--he being one of those that doesn't have a problem with the way things go on--came to a fairly simple explanation of why I, at least, find some things out of place where others don't. What it comes down to is not what is being said, but the way it is being said. Creator has said to me that when he reads these things he automatically interprets them--he takes the meaning and isn't concerned much with the delivery. Whereas I, being someone who likes to get all the way into a character, the way they think and speak, have quite a big interest in how things are said that I project onto the other players as well: because I want to portray Bel (Maeror the same) not just as having a certain attitude, but as having modes of speech specific to him (them), with word choice and phrasing being very important, I also expect to see others taking care in the protrayal of their character. It then stands out to me when others are not doing it.
It seems to me then, that the difference in opinion is a case of some people looking for something in the posts that others don't think about, when posting or just reading others' posts.

I agree and I think most people do this. We skim over the one liners and look for the important info.

But, the game has not even started and a few of us were just having a little fun. I see nothing wrong with this. Looking at P2, I think we were all well representing our characters through our posts and the vernacular was at a minimum. This will naturally happen again once the game is under way.
The only real critique I have seen is the use of emoticons and certain language used that simply doesn't fit with a godly setting (thus my question about the quotes.
You need to understand, though, that some of us are not as creative or gifted with the ability to write in godly script. I know that I, for one, do not consider myself an extra-stupendous creative writer. I think I have gotten better because of this game but I would be hard pressed to write a novel. Hence, the emoticons and more familiar language may be the best/easiest way for me to express what I need/want to in the game.

Also, the fact that I am earning my master's degree leaves me little time to truly sit down and carefully write and re-write my posts so that they fit in with the idea of god-speak. Sometimes, I can only post on the fly.
Personally, I'm completely open to critiques if anyone has them. I may not agree, but if there was something I could do better, I'd appreciate it if someone politely pointed it out.
Polite critiques are always welcome and I think everyone can agree to this. But the key word is polite.

While I know we would rather play than rant ... I need to get this out. And I will as 'Creator'.

[RANT]What I object to (and I believe Lucimay and Caamora) is someone coming in and taking an "I know best" tone. Having Dorian and Montressor come in here and opine on how we are doing it 'wrong' (with Mennolly gushing over how wonderful they are) comes across to me as extremely arrogant. Subsequent postings of 'its just my opinion' from those two read as hollow and insincere to me. I, for one, get pissed off when some one barges in and takes a superior tone.

Whereas I have never heard that 'tone' from either Murrin or Syl. Their comments, while perhaps similar in content, feel much less pushy.

[Edit: inappropriate reference to non-player in Rules and Comments Thread] Comment Deleted[/RANT]

I am VERY glad I got that off my chest!!

phew. and here i was thinking it was just ME (as per usual)

don't we "define" the world as we play?

game hasn't started yet. i'm adjusting my game persona with banter in the private court threads and in the game thread. i'm trying to figure out how the god i've created DOES talk, and think, and deal with other gods and mortals.
maybe some of the other players have their gods all down and know exactly how they should speak and behave, but i am still trying to get a feel for an Carraig.
any and ALL advice, courteously given (private or public) is welcomed.

I'd say that since these are new gods coming into a fictional world, then their only cultural context is that of the fictional world. Which means that their modes of communication would have a basis in that world and not our world. Which is where the suspension of disbelief breaks, when things one of us thinks of as specifically our-world appear in the in-game stuff.
Of course, the fictional world doesn't actually have a culture other than the one we create for it, so it's hard to say that something is or isn't right for it, which is why we're having trouble getting round all this stuff--different people think of different things as being specific to our-world and not belonging in the game world.

Not that I mind ... but that suggests that 'mommy' would be ok (Eiran has mommies :P) but that Hannibel Lector quotes would not! [Not to criticize you Syl; I LIKED that Hannibel Lector quote! Gave me a chuckle. :) ]

It's like Murrin mentioned ... I adjust ... reinterpret. Perhaps because I am new at this, I don 'know' that such references impact the atmosphere!

Oh, sorry, didn't mean to frighten you, just a newbie (at least a registered newbie) out checking out all the different forums. Saw your question so thought I'd provide the extent of my very limited knowledge of "godly banter".

Heh. I actually thought of that while I was writing the post, and almost added that we can bend that perception a bit to account for things like Aarklar--but then I thought that just confuses the point of my post even further. Aarklar is a concept that works well when he has free access to all those sources, but you're right--it shouldn't fit. There are exceptions to every rule. It's that suspension of disbelief thing again--it works in strange ways. Half of it is subconscious.
