Bloodguard or Haruchai?

Post by The Laughing Man »

would Cail be considered a Bloodguard, or just Haruchai? My memories are certainly lacking and very fuzzy, and for some reason I'm thinking Cail broke some vow to be with the Merewives. Add to that there being no more Blooguard in the 2nd Chrons, but I recently saw a mention in wiki that Covenant convinced the Haruchai to re-assume their vows. Color me totally confused, and does anyone have any info to shed some light on this once and for all for me? :?

They Volunteered to serve him. He didn't want them to. More people depending on him, and he's already out of the game (he knew he had sold himself to Foul.)

They said they broke their vow when they abandoned the Ur-Lord to go after the Merwives.

Esmer, in TWL, there are Haruchai prisoners to be sacrificed to the banfire. Covenant gains their release, and Brinn offers the service of Cail, Stell, Ceer, Harn, Hegrom, and himself in the quest for the One Tree.

So far in my skimming, I see no mention of a vow. But I only started looking...

*nodding*
What EL said. But, do we ever hear of an actual vow, EL?

There's no Vow, just a vow. Brinn, Ceer, Cail, et.al. are not Bloodguard.

... and I don't think that the vow was formal, either. It was implicit. Covenant knew that the Haruchai were serving him, and the Haruchai knew that he knew. And, to them, service is a vow.
In The Wounded Land was wrote:Brinn nodded. "It is good. This the Haruchai will do. Cail, Stell, Ceer, Harn, Hergrom, and myself will share your quest, to ward you and your companions. Two score will return to our people, to give them the knowledge we have gained." His voice sharpened slightly. "And to consider our reply to the depredations of this Clave. Those who remain will see these Stonedownors and Woodhelvennin to their homes-if such aid is desired."

... Now, Covenant said to himself. If ever he intended to refuse the Haruchai, escape his being dependent on and responsible for them again after four thousand years, now was the time. But he could not.
And Cail and Brinn did not end any vow. They merely withdrew their service.
"We speak neither for our people among their mountains nor for those Haruchai who may seek to wage themselves against the depredations of the Clave. But we will no longer serve you."

Service, Vow. To the Haruchai, I believe it's the same thing.

Agreed, but it's a small "v" vow, not a Vow. IOW, there was no sleep-depriving Earthpower Vow.

thanx a whole bunch guys, thats exactly what i needed to know. Cail was not a Bloodguard, and merely withdrew his service to Covenant, and any vow he took was nothing in comparison to the Vow the Bloodguard took in service to the Land. i just needed to know cuz i wanted an item from the shop to represent Esmer's dad, and i kept thinking Cail was a Bloodguard, but something about that just didn't sit right, heh. you guys rock! 8)

are we ever going to know what happened when Cail went to the Merewives? i would love to see the story from that particular time. maybe FR will give more clues, and the books to come too. Esmer's history absolutely fascinates me. :D

one Haruchai down, one ur-vile to go!

yea, but we don't know how it happened. Haruchai, Merewives and some lore all rolled up into an immortal Esmer, it'd be nice to know how that went down. Esmer: The Early Years. heh. :D
