His orientation is completely irrelevant ot the story. It wasn't in the books because there's no logical place to put it in the books. Personally, I think she's was just playing a trick on the conservative christian set -- let them fall in love with this wise, authoritative patriarch, then- whoops! -- your hero turns out to be gay!
