The Desecration game everyones playing.
Trell performed the ROD inside Revelstone. Hile Troy murdered the Bloodguard sworn to protect him. Elena broke the law of death. Name the character and the moment of despair that caught you most off guard. My money rides on Joan who's betrayal seems to have made all others possible.

Agree as a shocker, but I don't think he did it out of despair...Fist and Faith wrote:Two good choices. Of course, Covenant raping Lena could be at the top of the list, eh?

Well, technically, this may not qualify, but the massacre of the giants was the kicker. Sure, it was a Raver & the Stone, but there was still a giant inside, he must have been in tremendous agony. The bloodguard betrayed by LA and HT was bad, even undead-Elena, the Raver-giant's armies were against, mostly, other soldiers - Kinslaughterer was butchering even children, his kin.

Agreed... it was a Desecration.Fist and Faith wrote:Well, interpretations can vary. But it was surely a Desecration.

Kinslaughterer murdering all his kin. The Giants love home and family above all else, and he wiped them out totally. How could he, who still existed under the Raver, have stood it?
Heard my ears aright? Did not the gaddhi grant me this glaive?

I agree... also, I saw that as an act of despair for the whole group of the Unhomed. SF was the only one who resisted.Rocksister wrote:Kinslaughterer murdering all his kin. Can't say it caught me most off guard as it was told mostly anecdotally, but Sunder sacrificing of his wife (son also?)... absolutely gut wrenching desecrations.

The Sunbane wins for worst. And for giving me the biggest shock.
But the one that wrenched my heart the most was when Covenant was burning himself up before the gates of Revelstone. That being Foul's Desecration of Covenant.
Close second is when Kasreyn had Covenant about to pluck out his own eyes.

I agree. The SunBane was the absolute worse. I remember thinking "This is gonna be a looong trilogy" when I first read about the Sunbane....wayfriend wrote:The Sunbane wins for worst. And for giving me the biggest shock.

We see a lot of lists of bad things happening here, but are they all, really, desecrations?
In the world outside of Thomas Covenant, if you mention the word desecration, people tend to think of someone violating a grave, a church. Something holy or hallowed.
I think there are two in the books, and they are both done willingly without regard for the consequences, when they are done.
The rape, and Kevin's number with Foul.
Elena made herself blind to the consequences, but if she had known a little more, she'd never hadve summoned Kevin.
Kinslaughterer? If the real Giant had carried out the slaying, that would be a desecration. But he was just another victim of the raver and foul and the stone.
And I think a desecration isn't carried out in despair. Kevin's despair came a long time before the ritual. It was an excuse, to my mind, not the reason or cause.
Hile Troy killing his Bloodguard? Again, if he knew what he was doing, in his own self, he would not have wanted to do it, and if the Bloodguard had not been immune to the effects overal, he probably woulnd't have been caught of guard. Troy would have been slapped down like Linden was.
I think you are asking for two very different things.
Linden killing her mother. I mean, it happened in the real world. that's the moment of despair that gets me the most.

Do, or do not. There is no try.
