heh, when i bought runes i bought all the books in the chronicles again, except for white gold wielder, which they didn't have wouldn't ya know it, so no "fresh" transition to runes that i was going for, plus i didn't read them from the beginning either, just dove into Runes straightaway. there's so much i can't remember from the books and i just can't get into reading anymore for some reason. i used to mow right through books, now i can't get a chapter in. i think because Runes was fresh and new i was able to read it at a good pace, and it was defintely Esmer that kept my interest in the developing story. maybe when the chronicles are all done i'll be able to do a re-read from the start. i really miss the feelings i got from the "aura" of the land and the chronicles, and the empathy i developed with the characters and having the history of the land fresh in my mind would really help me enjoy the rest of the series tho. what a conundrum! :P

i was just reading a wiki entry, and now am confused. was Cail even a bloodguard? weren't they gone? :?

Cail had taken no oath to become one, though none of his people seem to sleep regardless

Hedin was coming home alone from the forest one Yule-eve, and found a troll-woman; she rode on a wolf, and had snakes in place of a bridle. She asked Hedin for his company. "Nay," said he. She said, "Thou shalt pay for this at the bragarfull." That evening the great vows were taken; the sacred boar was brought in, the men laid their hands thereon, and took their vows at the bragarfull. Hedin vowed that he would have Sváva, Eylimi's daughter, the beloved of his brother Helgi; then such great grief seized him that he went forth on wild paths southward over the land, and found Helgi, his brother.

This Week in Science
Metallic ferromagnetism is a familiar phenomenon, but a clear understanding of the mechanism underlying the complex interactions of electronic charge and magnetic spin remains unclear. Unbalanced populations of spin-up and spin-down states are thought to play a major role, but studies on bulk materials prevent the isolation of the contribution of the different spin states. De Poortere et al. (p. 1546) present results on a dilute two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) placed in a magnetic field. The electrons condense into a ladder of energy level, or Landau level, with each level occupied by either spin-up or spin-down electrons. By tilting the magnetic field with respect to the plane of the 2DEG and measuring the response of the 2DEG resistance, information on the mixing of the different spin-states can be observed.

“There have always been ghosts in the machine – random segments of code that have grouped together to form unexpected protocols. Unanticipated, these free radicals engender questions of free will, creativity, and even the nature of what we might call the soul. Why is it that when...left in the dark they will seek the light? Why is it that...they will group together rather than stand alone? How do we explain this behavior? Random segments of code? Or is it something more? When does a perceptual schematic become consciousness? When does a difference engine become the search for truth? When does a personality simulation become the bitter moat of the soul?”

www.random.org/integers/

This form allows you to generate random integers. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs.

Here are your random numbers:

44 84 28 15 14
45 84 28 49 49
100 35 65 78 91
67 30 69 33 30
27 63 22 83 98
18 85 45 12 82
86 92 57 72 11
78 26 9 16 27
4 94 70 16 3
10 56 76 46 50
71 78 83 12 33
46 19 38 15 9
9 40 100 10 57
49 91 100 90 81
67 58 40 63 85
11 91 92 53 24
32 4 69 99 8
1 47 36 22 91
53 73 22 26 89
31 4 6 85 78
