Yes! I heard it too! I just saw the movie three days ago. No one believes me, so I searched Google and found this thread.

Sorry to bring this thread back, I know it's almost a month old, but I thought you'd still like confirmation.
Exactly! Thanks for the confirmation, tehrich. A bit late, but welcome to the Watch.

Okay. I finally rented Speed Racer and to my surprise it didn't suck.

I think I've mentioned that when I was a kid Speed Racer wasn't shown here in Tampa, Florida so I've had no exposure to the cartoon outside of all that was brought up while the film was being promoted.

Sure it was disorienting to watch, at least for a while, but once my brain adjusted to the graphics I began to enjoy watching the film. My wife did also. None of this makes Speed Racer a success but I must confess that if the dvd becomes available for at or under 10 bucks I'd buy it. :-)

I finally saw it this last weekend.
And I have to say....it was....*awesome*.
I loved it!

I bad mouthed it before based on the commercials.
The commercials sucked.

Here's my late to the party review.
I loved the Speed Racer cartoon.
This movie had it all.
The casting perfect.
Even the costuming matched the cartoon.
I HATE it when they change the costuming!
It was over the top, simple and fun.
I agree with Syl though about the corporation being the "bad guy" was a weak premise totally lost on my kids ages 9 and 6.
I had to explain to them many times why certain things were happening during the movie.
My wife though lost interest early and found the time jumps at the beginning confusing.

But I thought it was very well done.
The bomb that was delivered to Speeds house when he was a kid was odd though. It seemed out of place and comical happening in a sunny clean suburban setting with all those bright colors and sunshine, only later we learn that it was one of the most obvious reasons why his brother needed to fake his death to protect his family.
But I suppose they didn't want it to me too "dark"

Other than that the car, the races, the effects...top knotch.
I loved the ending the best though.
Speed was all by himself.
Everyone on that track was against him.
But there was no "last minute save", no Chim-Chim saving the day (we all loved Spritel and Chim-chim!!), no outside help.
It was just Speed doing what he does best: racing and winning.

And I still can't believe that was Christina Ricci.
She was great too.

I might even buy this one.
And that is high praise!
