Does anyone know Chinese?

Post by Worm of Despite »

If any of you are cool enough to know the language, I will give you a large Emoticon and my endless thanks. I only need a few lines of dialogue changed from English to Chinese. It's for a story I'm doing.

I don't, but you need to specify whether you want Cantonese or Mandarin.

And do you want the characters, or phonetic pronunciation of those characters?

Phonetic and whatever's the most common. I can PM you the dialogue, if you wish.

Alta-vista babelfish FTW!

这是中国文本的例子。
"This is an example of Chinese text."

I can say from experience, it's German/English English/German is not what a native would write, and baffling at times, but it's good enough to get a point across.

What's most common depends on the part of China that you're referring to. Mandarin is the official, but is not spoken by all. Different regions use different dialects/languages.
By phonetic, do you mean pinyin or what it actually sounds like to English-speakers?
I wouldn't use Babelfish. Most of the time it's pretty far off.
Unfortunately, I only know a few sentences in Mandarin, and they probably aren't the sentences you need.

By phoenetic, he means transliteration into English charaters of the proper way to say it in the dialect LF choooses. Is that what pinyin is?

Yes, but it often doesn't look like how it's actually pronounced.

Isn't Matrixman originally from Hong Kong?

Yeah, my first thought was "MM's your man" but he's mostly out of the picture. Someone could PM him on the Hangar.

Thanks, DW, for your help. I'm still needing a phonetic translation. I think I will indeed hold out for the MM. Someone drag him from the Hangar. If not, I shall ambush him.

I already asked him, LF.

Sorry about that...
